Diplomats Finish Among Leaders in Final Centennial Conference Baseball Statistics

LANCASTER, PA -- Franklin & Marshall College outfielders Scott Haft (Jr., Jupiter, FL/Jupiter), Dan Hanecak (So., Conestoga, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and Corey Caruthers (So., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor), second baseman Rob Georgiou (Sr., Tappan, NY/Bergen Catholic), shortstop Chris Smith (So., Fairfax Station, VA/Robinson), third baseman Gary Kruger (So., East Islip, NY/East Islip), first baseman Gordie Eck (Sr., Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic), catcher Dan Weber (Sr., Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin), pitchers Scott Solomon (Sr., Birmingham, AL/Mountain Brook), Ted Serro (So., Brooklyn, NY/Xavier), EJ Leary (So., Seymour, CT/Seymour) and Pete Maki (Sr., Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) finished among the leaders in the final Centennial Conference (CC) baseball statistics for the 2004 season. The team's closer, Maki saved six games in 17 appearances to rank second in the conference. Overall, his performance tied former F&M closer Mark Osowick '89, who recorded six saves during the 1988 season, for the program's single season saves record. Further, he is tied for sixth in the Centennial Conference in career saves with six. Also on the mound, Leary finished third in saves with three, while Serro concluded the year with 42 strikeouts to rank 10th in the conference and Solomon registered six wins to rank fifth in victories. At the plate, Caruthers ranked in sacrifice flies (four, first) and walks (19, sixth), Georgiou concluded the year 10th in runs (33) and fourth in hits (54), Eck was seventh in sacrifice bunts (three), Hanecak placed fourth in doubles (12) and Smith finished ninth in hits (48) and doubles (11). The program's leader in career doubles (42) and a 2004 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team recipient, Haft shattered his own single season doubles record of 14 from the 2002 season as he finished first in doubles (18) and third in RBI (35), while Weber was 15th in batting average (.358) and seventh in hit-by-pitch (six). A third team All-Region selection, Kruger ranked among the CC's best in batting average (.408, third), runs (39, fifth), hits (58, third), RBI (30, sixth), triples (four, fifth) and stolen bases (25, fifth). As a team, F&M finished among the leaders in saves (11, first), batting average (.313, second), runs (267, second), hits (436, second), doubles (91, second), RBI (235, second), total bases (607, second), wins (24, second), innings pitched (333.1, second), strikeouts (241, second), shutouts (three, second), stolen bases (79, third), homeruns (20, third), fielding percentage (.946, fourth), slugging percentage (.435, fourth), walks (121, fourth), ERA (5.40, fourth), on-base percentage (.372, fifth), opponents' batting average (.289, fifth), triples (10, sixth) and hit-by-pitch (eighth, 20). Franklin & Marshall (24-19, 12-6 Centennial Conference) concluded the season by competing in the Centennial Conference Championship series for the first time in program history.
