FT. PIERCE, FL – Franklin & Marshall outfielder Corey Caruthers (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) went four-for-seven with a double, an RBI and a run scored, but Alvernia College used 21 hits and 12 runs to sweep the Diplomats 7-2 and 10-2 to open the 2005 baseball season. In game one, the Crusaders used six hits and six F&M errors to plate seven runs, while starting pitcher Jason Zeigler allowed three hits and struck out two with two runs allowed in six innings in a 7-2 Alvernia win. For F&M, Dan Hanecak (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Lancaster Catholic) led the way going one-for-three with a triple and a run scored, while Caruthers was one-for-three with an RBI. In game two, Alvernia plated a run in the first inning and a pair in the second for all the Crusaders would need in a 10-2 victory. Anthony Recker went four-for-five at the plate for the Crusaders with one run scored, while Eric Bonds and Steve Burdan were both two-for-four with two runs scored for Alvernia. For F&M, Hanecak went one-for-four with a triple, while Caruthers was three-for-four with a double. The losses snap a three game win streak by F&M against Alvernia and evens the all-time series record at 6-6 between the two programs. Franklin & Marshall (0-2, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on March 14 versus Keystone College and Delaware Valley College at 8:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., respectively, in Fort Pierce.
