Franklin & Marshall Goes 1-1 Versus Keystone & Delaware Valley in Baseball

FT. PIERCE, FL – Franklin & Marshall’s Dan Hanecak (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Lancaster Catholic) went three-for-seven with three runs scored, a walk and two RBI as the Diplomats defeated Keystone College 9-5 and fell to Delaware Valley College 3-1 in spring break baseball action.

In game one, the Diplomats (1-3, 0-0 Centennial Conference) slugged 10 hits to overpower Keystone (3-2, 0-0 NEAC) 9-5 behind the bats of Hanecak, Jon Compitello (Jr., Yardley, PA/George School) and Gary Kruger (Jr., East Islip, NY/East Islip) who combined to go seven-for-10 with five runs scored and five RBI.

Hanecak led the way going two-for-three at the plate with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk, while Kruger went three-for-three with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Compitello went two-for-four with three RBI, while Corey Caruthers (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) knocked in two runs and scored another with a one-for-four performance at the plate.

On the mound, Jeff Rowand (So., York, PA/Dallastown) earned the win going five innings while allowing four runs, while Stephen Wurster (Fr., Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) earned a save going two innings and allowing one run.

The win improves Franklin & Marshall to 2-0 all-time against the Giants as the Diplomats recorded a 3-1 win in Ft. Pierce on March 15, 2004.

In game two, Delaware Valley (1-4, 0-0 MAC) pushed across two runs in the fourth and an insurance run in the sixth as the Aggies downed the Diplomats 3-1.

For F&M, Rich Gallugi (Fr., Peabody, MA/St. John’s Prep) led the way going one-for-four to drive in Marquis Vazquez (Fr., Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) for an RBI in the top of the seventh.

On the mound, Jeremy Knox (Jr., Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) took the loss fanning five in six innings of work, while Delaware Valley’s Jason Champagne earned the win going the distance while striking out five.

The Diplomats had their chances to tie the game in the seventh as the tying run came to the plate twice in the inning, but Champagne got both to ground out to end the threat.

For the Aggies, Mike Gargiulo knocked in three runs with a pair of doubles. He gave Delaware Valley a 2-0 lead in the fourth with a two-out, two-run double that scored Steve Kinney and Derek Scholl. In the sixth, Gargiulo's two-bagger brought home Scholl with two outs.

The loss drops F&M to 0-4 all-time against the Aggies, as the two teams will meet again on March 16 in Ft. Pierce.

Franklin & Marshall (1-3, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on March 15 versus Cazenovia College in Fort Pierce. Game time is set for 6:15 p.m.
