GETTYSBURG, PA – Ben Carey singled down the left-field line to drive in Joe Bonyai with the game-winning run as Gettysburg College rallied to defeat Franklin & Marshall College 3-2 in 10 innings in Centennial Conference baseball action on the campus of Gettysburg College. Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the eighth, Gettysburg pinch hitter Jimmy McNamara singled to left centerfield before being replaced by pinch runner Jon Giordano. Sean McGee singled to right center to move Giordano to second base as the Bullets’ first two batters reached base. Austin Ball sacrificed to move the runners up a base before Bonyai singled through the right side of the infield to knock in two runs and tie the score at 2-2. Franklin & Marshall had a chance to retake the lead in the top of the 10th as Stephen Frederick (Jr., Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) reached on a fielding error at third base and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Tom Miller (Fr., York, PA/Central York) and a sacrifice fly by Pat O’Reilly (Fr., Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), but Gettysburg pitcher Tobin Whitman struck out Rob Stern (Fr., Franklin Lakes, NJ/Indian Hills) for the final out of the inning. In the bottom of the 10th, Bonyai reached on a fielding error at shortstop and moved to second as Brian Pernice laid down a sacrifice bunt. Andrew Freeburger walked to put runners on first and second with one out as Carey singled off F&M reliever Dan Tischler (Fr., New York, NY/Horace Mann) to bring around Bonyai for the 3-2 final. Overall, Whitman picked up the win going the distance allowing six hits and two runs with two walks and seven strikeouts in 10 innings. Jeremy Knox (Jr., Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) went eight innings for the Diplomats allowing two runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts, while Tischler took the loss going 1.1 innings allowing one run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout. The Diplomats opened the scoring in the fourth inning as O’Reilly singled to left center field and Stern doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third with no outs. Following a pop-up, Corey Caruthers (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) flied out to centerfield to bring in O’Reilly for a 1-0 lead. F&M tacked on another run in the sixth as O’Reilly doubled down the right field line and Stern Walked to put runners on first and second. Caruthers delivered again driving a two-out pitch into right field to bring in O’Reilly for a 2-0 lead. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak by the Diplomats over Gettysburg as Franklin & Marshall is now 48-99-1 all-time against the Bullets. Franklin & Marshall (6-7, 2-2 Centennial Conference) will return to action on April 9 at home versus #7 Johns Hopkins University in a Centennial Conference doubleheader. The game will mark a rematch of the 2004 Centennial Conference Championship Series that the Blue Jays won 18-15 and 17-9 in Baltimore on May 1 and 2. Opening pitch of game one is set for 12:30 p.m.
