Serro Named Pitcher of the Year as Diplomats Place Six on All-Centennial Conference Baseball Team

LANCASTER, PA – Right-hander Ted Serro (Jr., Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) was named Pitcher of the Year as 2005 Centennial Conference champion Franklin & Marshall College placed six players on the 2005 All-Centennial Conference baseball team.

The Diplomats garnered two first team selections in Serro and outfielder Corey Caruthers (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor).

The second Franklin & Marshall player to earn Pitcher of the Year honors following Tim Sheridan ’96 in 1995 and 1996, Serro is 6-3 with a 2.20 earned run average, three complete games, two shutouts and 66 strikeouts in 61 innings this season.

He ranks fifth in single season victories (six), fourth in strikeouts (66), seventh in innings pitched and 13th in complete games in the Franklin & Marshall College single season record book.

In Centennial Conference games, he was 4-1 with one complete game and one shutout while recording a 2.04 ERA and .181 opponents’ batting average with 39 strikeouts and 10 walks in 35.1 innings.

Against #21 Johns Hopkins University in the Centennial Conference championship series, Serro went 1-0 with a 1-0 victory over the Blue Jays in game one as he fanned six with no walks and allowed two runners to reach third base in the game.

For his career, Serro is 12-5 in 32 appearances with 16 starts and six complete games while recording 122 strikeouts and 31 walks with 36 earned runs in 125.1 innings for a 2.59 ERA.

Historically, he is tied with Thomas Bachman ’78, Jeff Wagner ‘80 and Scott Solomon ’04 for sixth in career wins at the College, and ranks seventh in strikeouts, 11th in innings pitched and ninth in complete games in program history.

Caruthers is hitting .308 (40-for-130) with 25 runs scored, five doubles, one triple, two home runs, 21 RBI and was 13-for-17 in stolen bases on the year.

In Centennial Conference games, he hit .311 (19-for-61) with two doubles, one home run, 10 RBI, 10 walks and seven stolen bases on eight attempts.

In his career, he has 68 runs, 18 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 57 RBI and 38 stolen bases on 47 attempts with a .300 (115-for-383) batting average in 113 games as he ranks eighth in hits, 13th in runs, 11 in RBI and sixth in stolen bases.

Catcher Stephen Frederick (Jr., Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) and outfielder Dan Hanecak (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Lancaster Catholic) earned All-CC second team honors.

Frederick hit .284 (23-for-81) with 16 runs scored, five doubles, 11 RBI and eight stolen bases on eight attempts in 26 games to raise his career totals to 20 runs, seven doubles, 19 RBI and 10 stolen bases on 11 attempts with a .289 (33-for-114) batting average in 43 games.

In Centennial Conference games, he hit .326 (15-for-46) with four doubles, six walks, nine runs, seven RBI and eight stolen bases on eight attempts.

A two-time All-Centennial Conference selection following second team honors in 2004, Hanecak led the Diplomats with a .366 average (45-for-123) with 18 runs scored, a team high 12 doubles, two triples, 21 RBI and six stolen bases on six attempts.

In Centennial Conference games, he hit .433 (29-for-67) with 10 doubles, 16 RBI, 11 runs, a .582 slugging percentage and six stolen bases on six attempts

For his career, he is hitting .350 (91-for-260) with 39 runs, 27 doubles, three triples, one home run, 49 RBI and 10 stolen bases on 13 attempts in 84 games as he ranks 16th in hits and fourth in doubles in school history.

Right-hander Jeremy Knox (Jr., Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) and third baseman Gary Kruger (Jr., East Islip, NY/East Islip) round out the All-CC selections as the duo were named honorable mention.

Knox is 4-2 on the year with a 3.52 earned run average, two complete games in nine starts and 48 strikeouts in 64 innings, including a 2-0 record in Centennial Conference games with a 3.38 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 32.0 innings of work.

For his career, he is 9-5 with 90 strikeouts and a 3.89 ERA in 129.2 innings of work

A two-time All-Centennial Conference selection following first team honors in 2004, Kruger is batting .363 (41-for-113) with a team high 34 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, two home runs, 24 RBI, 28 walks and 28 stolen bases on 30 attempts this year.

In Centennial Conference games, he hit .377 (20-for-53) with four doubles, a triple, a home run, 13 walks, 11 RBI and 11 stolen bases on 12 attempts.

For his career, Kruger is hitting .361 (108-for-299) with 13 doubles, eight triples, seven home runs, 49 walks, 57 RBI and 71 stolen bases on 78 attempts in 103 games.

The career stolen base leader, he ranks 11th in hits, second in triples, fourth in home runs and 11th in RBI in school history.

Franklin & Marshall (25-14, 15-3 Centennial Conference) defeated Johns Hopkins University 1-0 in game one on May 7 and 4-3 in game three on May 8 to win the best of three Centennial Conference championship series and claim the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Regional Tournament.

The championship marks the third in school history as Franklin & Marshall last won the Centennial Conference title 10 years ago in 1995 as the Diplomats recorded a 30-6-1 record to win the regular season by three games over McDaniel College and earn the second conference title in school history. In 1978, the Diplomats finished 14-11-1 to win the Middle Atlantic Conference championship.

The NCAA field and regional site location will be announced on May 16.
