4/10/05

LANCASTER, PA – Corey Caruthers (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor), Gary Kruger (Jr., East Islip, NY/East Islip) and Rob Stern (Fr., Franklin Lakes, NY/Indian Hills) each recorded four hits on the day as Franklin & Marshall College recorded a Centennial Conference baseball sweep over Washington College 10-2 and 14-7.

In game one, the Diplomats jumped on the Shoremen in the first inning as F&M sent 13 batters to the plate scoring eight runs on five hits and three Washington errors. In the inning Stern had two singles while Pat O’Reilly (Fr., Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored twice.

The runs were all starting pitcher EJ Leary (Jr., Seymour, CT/Seymour) would need as he threw five straight scoreless innings before giving up a two out home run to John Schmidt.

Franklin & Marshall added two runs in the top of the fifth as Eric Milavsky (Jr., Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by Billy McGuire (So., Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) before scoring on a double by Tommy Miller (Fr., York, PA/Central York). Miller came into score two batters later as Stern doubled for the Diplomats.

Leary earned the win going seven innings allowing two earned runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts for his second win of the season.

In game two, the Diplomats scored in six of the nine innings for 14 runs. Franklin & Marshall broke the scoring column in the top of the first inning as O’Reilly opened the game with a single then stole second. After Kruger singled, O’Reilly and Kruger stole third and second as O’Reilly scored on a passed ball. Caruthers lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Kruger for a 2-0 lead.

F&M added another run in the top of the second before the Shoremen cut the lead scoring single runs in the second third innings to cut the Diplomats lead to 3-2.

The Diplomats then scored 11 runs over the next five innings before Washington answered with four runs in the final two frames for the 14-7 score.

In the game, F&M pitcher Todd Cagwin (Sr., Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) went six innings allowing three runs on five hits to earn the victory. Bobby Goman (Fr., Verona, NJ/Verona) pitched the following two innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five before Dave Achey (Fr., Harleysville, PA/LaSalle Prep) pitched the ninth allowing two unearned runs on one hit.

The win marked the 100th of head coach Brett Boretti’s career at the College as he now holds a 100-74 record.

Franklin & Marshall (9-8, 5-3 Centennial Conference) will return to action on April 12 at Haverford College. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
