Franklin & Marshall Defeats Haverford 8-3 in Baseball First Place Clash

LANCASTER, PA – Right fielder Dan Hanecak (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Lancaster Catholic) went four-for-five with two runs scored and an RBI at the plate and Ted Serro (Jr., Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) went eight innings allowing one run on seven hits with six strikeouts to earn the win as the Franklin & Marshall College baseball team handled Haverford 8-3 in a Centennial Conference first place clash. Haverford, which entered the game in a tie for first place in the Centennial Conference with Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg, Johns Hopkins and Ursinus, struck in the top of the first inning as second basemen Brandon Mills ripped a triple to the right field fence and scored on a groundout by Steve Andelman for a 1-0 lead. Franklin & Marshall answered in the bottom of the inning as Pat O’Reilly (Fr., Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) led off with the inning with a double and scored two batters later on a Gary Kruger (Jr., East Islip, NY/East Islip) single. Kruger came around to score two batters later on a two out single by Hanecak to give F&M a 2-1 lead. The Diplomats added to the lead in the third inning as Corey Caruthers (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) and Hanecak singled before Stephen Frederick (Jr., Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) drove Caruthers in on a one out double. Hanecak crossed the plate with the winning run on a walk by Rob Stern (Fr., Franklin Lakes, NJ/Indian Hills) for a 4-1 advantage. Hanecak scored again in the fourth as he singled and moved to third on a single by Eric Milavsky (Jr., Medford, NJ/Shawnee) before coming in on an infield error for a 5-1 lead. In the eighth, Milavsky singled to drive in Scott Haft (), Frederick singled to plate Caruthers and Tom Miller (Fr., York, PA/Central York) singled to drive in Milavsky for an 8-1 lead. The Fords scratched two runs across the plate in the top of the ninth off F&M reliever Matt Kalos (Fr., Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham) as Andelman drove Ryan Frankel and Rahul Munshi in on a two out double for the 8-3 final score. The win keeps Franklin & Marshall in a four-way tie for first place as Hopkins defeated McDaniel 13-6, Gettysburg dropped Dickinson 7-2 and Ursinus managed Muhlenberg 7-2. Franklin & Marshall (13-12, 7-3 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 16 at McDaniel College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
