Knox & Diplomats Knock Off Swarthmore 9-4 in Baseball to Move into Sole Possession of First Place

LANCASTER, PA – Jeremy Knox (Jr., Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) went eight innings allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with 10 strikeouts to lead Franklin & Marshall College to a 9-4 victory over Swarthmore College in Centennial Conference baseball at Caplan Field. The Diplomats jumped on the board in the second inning as Scott Haft (Sr., Jupiter, FL/Jupiter) led the inning off with a walk before back-to-back singles by Corey Caruthers (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) and Dan Hanecak (Jr., Conestoga, PA/Lancaster Catholic) scored Haft for a 1-0 lead. Caruthers came across the plate on a Jon Compitello (Jr., Yardley, PA/George School) sacrifice fly before Stephen Frederick (Jr., Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) scored Hanecak on a double. Tommy Miller (Fr., York, PA/Central York) singled to move Frederick to third and stole second base as Frederick scored on the throw. Miller scored two batters later as Josh Welk (So., Strasburg, PA/Lancaster Christian) reached on an error for a 6-0 lead after two innings of play. Swarthmore answered back in the top of the third inning as the Garnet sent nine batters to the plate scoring four runs on five hits to cut the Diplomats’ lead to 6-4. Franklin & Marshall got two runs back in the bottom of the third inning as Miller scored Frederick on a double and Pat O’Reilly (Fr., Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) reached on an error to score Miller and give F&M an 8-4 lead. The Diplomats tacked on another run in the seventh inning for the 9-4 final. Dave Achey (Fr., Harleysville, PA/LaSalle Prep) finished the game for Knox in the ninth walking two and striking out one as the Diplomats moved into sole possession of first place in the Centennial Conference as Ursinus College lost 19-4 to Haverford College. For Franklin & Marshall, Miller and Hanecak each recorded two hits and an RBI, while Miller and Frederick each scored two runs to lead the Diplomats to their 17th win of the season. Franklin & Marshall (17-12, 10-3 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 20 at home versus York College of Pennsylvania. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
