GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University leftfielder Frank Haesenauer went five-for-eight with an RBI to lead the Owls to a 7-2 and 7-6 doubleheader sweep of Franklin & Marshall College in non-conference baseball. In the first game, left-hander Ryan Kulik pitched a complete game allowing two runs and striking out four Diplomats to take a 7-2 victory. Designated hitter Paul Urbanovich went two-for-four with two RBIs and one run scored, while Hasenauer slugged two hits in three plate appearances. For the Diplomats, rightfielder Dan Hanecak (Sr., Conestoga, PA/Lancaster Catholic) went three-for-three with a walk, while second baseman Rob Stern (So., Franklin Lakes, NJ/Indian Hills) was two-for-four. On the mound, Ted Serro (Sr., Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) took the loss going six innings and allowing five runs on five hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. Matt Kalos (So., Melrose Park, PA/Cheltenham) finished the game for Serro going two innings with five hits and two runs allowed. Overall, all seven runs the Diplomats allowed were unearned as Franklin & Marshall committed three errors to permit the Professors to plate their runs. Kulik and Serro dueled for the first five innings of the game as Kulik allowed three hits and Serro two hits to keep the game scoreless. Franklin & Marshall broke through for a run in the top of the sixth as Eric Milavsky (Sr., Medford, NJ/Shawnee) singled and advanced to second base on a balk. Stern singled to put runners on the corners before Gary Kruger (Sr., East Islip, NY/East Islip) singled to drive in Milavsky. The Owls responded with three runs on two hits and a fielding error to go ahead 3-1 before tacking on a pair of runs on two hits and an error in the seventh to lead 5-1. Franklin & Marshall sliced the lead to 5-2 in the eighth inning as Stephen Frederick (Sr., Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) doubled and moved to third on ground ball before scoring on a ground out by Milavsky. However, Rowan slugged four hits and used a fielding error to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the 7-2 victory. In game two, Franklin & Marshall built a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but couldn’t hold on as the Professors scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and tacked on single runs in the second, fifth, sixth, ninth and 10th to take a 7-6 extra inning win. The Diplomats loaded the bases in the first against starting pitcher Rob Rose as Milavsky and Stern singled and Kruger walked to bring Corey Caruthers (Sr., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) to the plate. Caruthers walked to force in Milavsky for a 1-0 lead before Rose was lifted after facing only four batters. Facing reliever Tyler Dempsey, Pat O’Reilly (So., Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) slammed a three run double to score Stern, Kruger and Caruthers and push the lead to 4-0. The Professors countered with two runs on three hits and three fielding errors in the bottom of the first before using a hit and an error to tally a run in the second inning and cut Franklin & Marshall’s lead to 4-3. Rowan took the lead in the sixth inning as the Professors’ Bruce Reible slammed a solo homer in the fifth and Frank Galeota lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Dan Krause in the sixth for a 5-4 lead. The Diplomats tied the game in the seventh against reliever Gary Winkler as Kruger and O’Reilly singled. Following a fielders choice which moved Kruger to third base, pinch hitter Rich Gallugi (So., Peabody, MA/St. John’s Prep) reached on a fielding error at third base which allowed Kruger to score. The teams traded runs in the ninth for a 5-5 tie, but the Professors plated the winning run in the 10th as Roger Turley walked to lead off the inning and Galeota singled. Turley moved up to third base on an error at first base and scored on an error at shortstop to allow the winning run to score. Reliever Dan Tischler (So., New York, NY/Horace Mann) took the loss for the Diplomats allowing two runs on five hits and one walk with a strikeout in 4.2 innings. Bobby Fox earned the win for Rowan allowing a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Franklin & Marshall (9-6, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on March 26 at DeSales University. Game time is set for noon.
