4/26/06

YORK, PA – Rightfielder Rich Gallugi (So., Peabody, MA/St. John’s Prep) and catcher Matt Donahue (So., Westwood, NJ/Bergen Catholic) hit homeruns, but York College of Pennsylvania used a four run sixth inning to take a 6-4 win over Franklin & Marshall College in non-conference baseball at Jaquet Field.

F&M, which used all 21 players on the bench during the nine inning game, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as Pat O’Reilly (So., Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) doubled and Gallugi slammed a 325 foot home run down the left field line for his first intercollegiate homer.

York tied the game an inning later against reliever Matt Metsch (Fr., East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) as Rajiv Subramanian singled with one out before Jeff Young doubled to centerfield to drive in a run. The Spartans evened the game at 2-2 two batters later as Ryan Poff singled up the middle to bring in Young.

The Diplomats regained the lead in the top of the sixth as Gary Kruger (Sr., East Islip, NY/East Islip) and O’Reilly singled, while Kruger advanced to third on a throwing error at second base to put runners on the corners with no outs. Corey Caruthers (Sr., Conestoga, PA/Penn Manor) lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kruger for a 3-2 lead.

York erased the margin in the bottom of the inning as the Spartans scored four runs on three hits and a walk against reliever Josh Welk (Jr., Strasburg, PA/Lancaster Christian) for a 6-3 lead.

F&M responded to lead off the seventh as Donahue broke an 0-for-6 streak by launching a pitch from York College starting pitcher Chris Brower 320 feet down the right field line for his first intercollegiate hit and run to pull his team to within 6-4.

The York bullpen did the rest going the final two innings allowing no hits and one walk to hang on for the two run win.

Welk took the loss for the Diplomats, while Brower picked up the win for York allowing four runs on 10 hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Jed Vess earned a save for the Spartans pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

At the plate, Kruger was two-for-four with a run scored, while O’Reilly went two-for-three with a run for the Diplomats.

Franklin & Marshall (24-9, 14-2 Centennial Conference) will conclude the regular season on April 29 at Dickinson College of Pennsylvania in a Centennial Conference doubleheader. Game one is set for 12:30 p.m.
