LANCASTER, PA -- The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has announced the selection of Franklin & Marshall College pitcher Ted Serro (Sr., Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division second team.

Historically, he is the first baseball player in school history to earn Academic All-America honors as Serro’s selection marks the 36th time an F&M student-athlete has garnered national recognition. In the College’s history, there have been 13 third team, 16 second team and seven first team selections as 25 individuals have earned Academic All-American honors while competing for Franklin & Marshall College since Joe Fry earned the college's first honor in 1977.

Further, Serro was the only Centennial Conference player named to the Academic All-America team.

A 2006 first team and 2005 second team selection to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team and the 2006 Edward Garrigues '25 Men's Senior Athlete of the Year, the award caps a career in which Serro excelled on the mound and in the classroom.

The 2005 and 2006 Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year and a 2006 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Region first team selection, Serro concluded the season 8-3 in 11 appearances with a 1.48 earned run average, 79 strikeouts, 19 walks and a .191 opponents’ batting average in 79 innings.

The all-time wins leader in F&M history with 20 victories, he ranks among the career leaders in saves (fourth, five), strikeouts (second, 210), innings (second, 213 1/3) and complete games (fourth, 11) as he holds a 20-8 record, .209 opponents’ batting average and 2.07 earned run average with 210 strikeouts and 52 walks.

In single season records, he ranks among the leaders in wins (fourth, eight in 2006; seventh, six in 2005), earned run average (fifth, 1.48 in 2006; 12th, 1.92 in 2005), saves (fifth, three in 2003), strikeouts (third, 79 in 2006; fourth, 75 in 2005), innings pitched (fifth, 79 in 2006; eighth, 70 1/3 in 2005) and complete games (sixth, five in 2006).

In the history of the Centennial Conference, he stands second in earned run average (2.07), sixth in strikeouts (210) and strikeouts per nine innings (8.86), seventh in victories (20), eighth in saves (five), 11th in appearances (46), 15th in winning percentage (.714, 20-8), 16th in innings pitched (213.1) and 18th in complete games (11).

He concluded his career by allowing one run over his final 16 innings as he allowed two hits with 11 strikeouts over nine innings in a 10-0 shutout of Haverford College in game one of the Centennial Conference championship series and allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout in a 14-1 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College in the first game of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament.

A May 2006 graduate of the College with a degree in Business, Organizations & Society, Serro was active community service at Franklin & Marshall participating in the College’s Haunted Hallways program at Halloween and TeamWorks project in the spring.

This year marks the 54th year of the Academic All-America program, as the inaugural team was announced on December 6, 1952. Since that time, more than 14,000 students have been named Academic All-America team members at colleges and universities at all levels for every recognized NCAA sport.

To be nominated for the program by an institution’s sports information director, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.

More information on the Academic All-America program is available online at the CoSIDA website, www.cosida.org.
