Serro Named NCBWA Division III Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Year

LANCASTER, PA – Franklin & Marshall College’s Ted Serro (Sr., Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) has been named the 2006 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division III Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Year. A 2006 first team and 2005 second team selection to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team, the 2006 Edward Garrigues '25 Men's Senior Athlete of the Year and a College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA)/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America second team selection, the award caps a career in which Serro excelled on the mound and in the classroom. The 2005 and 2006 Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year and a 2006 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Region first team selection, Serro concluded the season 8-3 in 11 appearances with a 1.48 earned run average, 79 strikeouts, 19 walks and a .191 opponents’ batting average in 79 innings. The all-time wins leader in F&M history with 20 victories, he ranks among the career leaders in saves (fourth, five), strikeouts (second, 210), innings (second, 213 1/3) and complete games (fourth, 11) as he holds a 20-8 record, .209 opponents’ batting average and 2.07 earned run average with 210 strikeouts and 52 walks. In single season records, he ranks among the leaders in wins (fourth, eight in 2006; seventh, six in 2005), earned run average (fifth, 1.48 in 2006; 12th, 1.92 in 2005), saves (fifth, three in 2003), strikeouts (third, 79 in 2006; fourth, 75 in 2005), innings pitched (fifth, 79 in 2006; eighth, 70 1/3 in 2005) and complete games (sixth, five in 2006). In the history of the Centennial Conference, he stands second in earned run average (2.07), sixth in strikeouts (210) and strikeouts per nine innings (8.86), seventh in victories (20), eighth in saves (five), 11th in appearances (46), 15th in winning percentage (.714, 20-8), 16th in innings pitched (213.1) and 18th in complete games (11). He concluded his career by allowing one run over his final 16 innings as he allowed two hits with 11 strikeouts over nine innings in a 10-0 shutout of Haverford College in game one of the Centennial Conference championship series and allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout in a 14-1 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College in the first game of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament. A May 2006 graduate of the College with a degree in Business, Organizations & Society, Serro finished seventh in balloting for national pitcher of the year as Marietta College’s Mike Eisenberg earned the award after being named the Mideast Region Pitcher of the Year. Overall, Serro helped lead the Diplomats to the 2005 and 2006 Centennial Conference titles and appearances in the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Centennial Conference championship series as the team finished with a combined record of 95-63, including a 53-19 mark in Centennial Conference play, during his career. Franklin & Marshall concluded the season with a 29-11 record as the mark is the third most wins in school history behind the 1995 (30-6-1) and 2002 (31-10) teams. Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-American awards, publication and writing contests.
