Diplomats Top Johns Hopkins For First Time Since 1992

by Sports Information
9/26/01

LANCASTER, PA -- Nancy Cimino (So., Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) chipped an assist from Sara Yonker (Jr., Rockville, MD/Thomas S. Wootton) through a scramble in front of the Johns Hopkins net at the 63:54 mark as the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall College defeated the visiting Blue Jays 2-0 at Baker Field.

Jen Ferris (Sr., West Buxton, ME/Bonny Eagle) added an insurance score 4:44 later at 68:38 off a pass from Alison Reindle (Jr., Fleetwood, PA/Muhlenberg) as the Diplomats dumped the Blue Jays for the first time since a 4-1 victory in 1992.

Historically, the game marked the 19th meeting between F&M and the Blue Jays as Hopkins now holds a 12-6-1 series lead. Hopkins had won eight straight including the last three by shutout as JHU outscored the Diplomats 8-0, including a 5-0 win in Baltimore last year.

The key to the game for F&M was solid defense and goaltending leading to offensive transition. As a team, F&M would hold Johns Hopkins senior F Ashley Robbins without a point. Robbins entered the game as just the 12th Conference player to reach the 30-goal plateau for a career as she remains tied for 10th on the all-time Conference goal list.

In net, Jenny Lindner (Jr., Northport, NY/Friends Academy) recorded three saves on four Blue Jays shots as the Diplomats held JHU to two shots in each half.

Offensively, Franklin & Marshall used solid play by their midfielders and forwards to pepper JHU goalie Missi Schafhauser with 32 shots, including 22 in the second half as the Diplomats advanced the ball deep and pounded away until Cimino's score.

F&M will continue the season on Saturday at Centennial Conference foe Haverford College in an 11:00 a.m. on Philadelphia's Main Line. The Diplomats will return home to Lancaster following an October 2 date in Washington D.C. at Catholic University for a match with Division II Millersville University on October 4 for local bragging rights.
