CARLISLE, PA -- Kate Heintzelman (Sr., Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored off her own rebound off the pads of goalie Marissa Giorgio as the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats managed Dickinson College 1-0 in field hockey to clinch the #2 seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs. Heintzelman's goal with 8:38 remaining in the first half set a chain of events in motion which leaped the Diplomats over Gettysburg College and into a first round Centennial Conference playoff matchup with Johns Hopkins University at Washington College on Saturday. In goal, Jenny Lindner (Jr., Northport, NY/Friends Academy) recorded five saves, while Giorgio blocked away five F&M scoring attempts. With F&M's win, and a 1-0 loss by Gettysburg to Johns Hopkins earlier in the day, F&M moved ahead of the Bullets and into sole possession of second place in the CC standings as the Diplomats are now 7-2 in Conference play, while Gettysburg concludes the regular season 6-3 in CC action. Gettysburg would fall with just 54 seconds left in regulation. The loss means that the #4 seeded Bullets will face #1 seed and tournament host Washington College. On Saturday, Gettysburg shocked the Shorewomen 3-1 in an upset. Washington will conclude the Centennial Conference regular season tomorrow versus Western Maryland College, a team ranked #20 in the nation with a 12-4 overall record, but which will fail to advance to the Conference playoffs due to a 5-3 Conference record, including losses to Gettysburg and Hopkins.
