Diplomats Stun Gettysburg, 3-1, in Field Hockey

LANCASTER, PA -- It may have been senior day at Franklin & Marshall, but a junior was the star as Alison Reindle (Jr., Fleetwood, PA/Muhlenberg) assisted on the winning score and tallied a penalty stroke insurance goal as the Franklin & Marshall College field hockey team defeated Gettysburg College, 3-1, at Baker Campus.

Just 1:18 into play, F&M forward Sara Yonker (Jr., Rockville, MD/Thomas S. Wootton) would find senior midfielder Jen Ferris (Sr., West Buxton, ME/Bonny Eagle) in front of the goal mouth for the first of two first half scores by the Diplomats.

Reindle would factor in the next two F&M goals as she passed off to Lindsay Mohr (Fr., Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) with 15:40 left in the half for a 2-0 Diplomats' lead at the break.

But the Bullets would answer back in the last 35 minutes of the game as Kelly Mishier punched an unassisted score into the back of the cage at 37:23 to darken the Diplomats chances of a win nearly as much as the looming thunderstorm clouds overhead.

With the sun attempting to break through, and a little drizzle falling, Reindle would draw a penalty stroke with 19:01 to go. As the skies began to darken and the winds picked up, the junior defender would beat Gettysburg goalie Quinn Dougherty high on her stick side for insurance.

The last 19 minutes would be a battle of the two defenses as F&M held the Bullets to four second half shots, while Gettysburg limited the Diplomats to two scoring opportunities.

Overall, F&M would get the better of play throughout as they fired seven first half shots for the winning scores, while Gettysburg mustered zero first half shots against an oppressive blue and white defense.

In goal, Jenny Lindner (Jr., Northport, NY/Friends Academy) recorded a season low three saves, while Dougherty notched four stops.

With the win, F&M is tied with Gettysburg for second place in the conference standings, as both teams are 5-2 in Centennial Conference play.

In addition, it marks the first time that the Diplomats have defeated the Bullets since a 2-1 overtime triumph at the historic battle field site in 1993 and snapped a four game Gettysburg winning streak at Baker Campus.

Western Maryland, which entered the day 4-2 in CC action, temporarily slipped to fourth in the Conference standings due to inclement weather, forcing their game at Johns Hopkins to be postponed until Wednesday afternoon.

F&M (6-9, 5-2 Centennial Conference) will finish out the regular season on the road as the Diplomats will face Swarthmore College on Saturday, before polishing off the regular season with an October 23 game in Carlisle, Pennsylvania at Dickinson College.
