Swymelar Scores at 70 Minute Mark as Diplomats Defeat Lebanon Valley 2-1 in Field Hockey

9/9/04

ANNVILLE, PA -- Stacy Swymelar (Jr., Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) scored on a penalty corner with no time left on the clock as the Franklin & Marshall College field hockey team defeated Lebanon Valley 2-1.

The game appeared to be headed for overtime until the Diplomats were awarded a corner seconds before time expired. Then with the clock reading 0:00, Swymelar took the entry pass from Brenna Dolphin (So., Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy), dribbled to her left, and fired a shot into the left side of the cage to give F&M the victory.

Franklin & Marshall improved to 4-0 with the win as the team's record marks the second best season-opening winning streak in school history. Historically, the school record for best start by a field hockey team is 10-0-2 by the 1977 Diplomats who finished the season 14-3-2.

Against the Dutchwomen, the Diplomats jumped on the board first with seven minutes left in the first half as Brittany Croll (Jr., Frankford, DE/Indian River) found the back of the cage off an assist from Eileen Keever (Jr., Prospect Park, PA/Interboro) to give Franklin & Marshall College a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The Lady Dutchmen knotted the score at 1-1 quickly after the intermission as Steph Marguglio rebounded a missed shot to score 1:25 into the second half.

The half volleyed back-and-forth prior to Swymelar's goal as LVC outshot F&M 8-5 in the second half and received seven penalty corners to the Diplomats’ five.

In the cage, Michelle Altman (Jr., Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) recorded seven saves on 11 shots in ninety minutes of work, and LVC's Katie Pawlewicz and Abbey Gockley each made two saves while splitting time.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on September 14 at home versus Elizabethtown College. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
