Hampden-Sydney, VA -- Hampden-Sydney junior attack Chris Lucas scored six goals, including the game-winner in double-overtime, to help lead the 11th-ranked Tigers lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over #19 ranked Franklin and Marshall. Three goals by Lucas and two by junior Phil Dick helped push the Tigers out to a 10-5 lead after three-quarters of play. However, the Diplomats rallied to tie the contest with five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime. F&M jumped on the board quickly in the fourth as Jon Singer (Jr., Reisterstown, MD/Boys' Latin) beat Tigers' goalie Jeremy Bull with 13:33 left to play in the game. Vandy Vanderwarker (So., Keswick, VA/STAB) and Bas Solleveld (So., Glenmoore, PA/Shipley) each scored individual goals, while Steve Welsh (Fr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) chipped in a pair of scores, including one with 22 seconds left on the game clock to knot the game at 10. With 3:29 remaining in the second overtime period, Lucas scored an unassisted goal to win the contest for the Tigers, giving the team its first victory of the season. Bull recorded his first collegiate victory in the net for the Tigers with 14 saves, while F&M's Mike Sartorius (Fr., Summit, NJ/Summit) blocked away 17 shots in the effort. Franklin & Marshall will continue season on March 6 in North Carolina versus Kenyon College at Duke University. On March 9, the Diplomats will visit Lynchburg College before facing perennial power Washington & Lee on March 16. Franklin & Marshall will open the 2002 home season on March 20 versus Colorado College at 3:30 p.m. Admission to all F&M home games is free and open to the public. Score By Period
