Lynchburg Scores in Overtime to Best F&M in Men's Lacrosse, 11-10

by Sports Information
3/10/02

Fairfax, VA -- Lynchburg College's Kip Campbell scored at 62:26 in the first overtime period as the Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse team fell to 2-2 on the season with an 11-10 loss to the Hornets.

The game would be a seesaw battle as neither team could build a margin of larger than one goal at any point in the contest as the Hornets and Diplomats counter-scored throughout regulation.

Trailing 4-3 at halftime, F&M would outscore Lynchburg 5-4 in the third as the two teams entered the fourth tied at 8-to-8. But the tie wouldn't be broken until overtime as the two clubs scored two goals apiece to force the extra frame.

In overtime, F&M would win the face-off and blasted two shots at Lynchburg goalie Chris Johnson, but the sophomore goalie turned them away.

Overall, F&M would dominate the game winning 16-of-25 face-offs and clearing 17-of-22 Lynchburg scoring chances. Defensively, the Diplomats committed no fouls in the game, a mark that is believed to be the first time in program history that a Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse team did not commit a penalty in a game to hold its opponent without an extra man opportunity.

Bas Solleveld (So., Glenmoore, PA/Shipley) scored four goals, Jon Singer (Jr., Reisterstown, MD/Boys' Latin) added three scores, while both Andrew Kuskowski (Sr., Huntington, NY/Huntington) and Chris Wathey (Fr., South Huntington, NY/St. Anthonys') chipped in a goal and an assist to lead the Diplomats.

In goal, F&M's Mike Sartorius (Fr., Summit, NJ/Summit) stopped 10 of Lynchburg's 41 shots, while Johnson blocked away nine of the Diplomats' 36 scoring attempts.

The game marked the third overtime game in a week for F&M, which defeated Kenyon College 12-10 at Duke University on March 6, but fell 11-10 at Hampden-Sydney College in double-overtime earlier in the week.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season with a highly anticipated face-off with perennial power Washington & Lee on March 16 in Lexington, Virginia. The Diplomats will open the 2002 home season on March 20 versus Colorado College at 3:30 p.m. Admission to all F&M home games is free and open to the public.
