WESTMINSTER, PA -- Western Maryland College's Tom Brown scored the game winner in double-overtime as the Green Terror stunned the Diplomats 13-12 in double overtime in Centennial Conference action. The game marked the fourth overtime game of the year for the Diplomats, as three of Franklin & Marshall's four losses have come with extra time on the clock. To date, the Diplomats are 1-3 in overtime games in 2002, defeating Kenyon 12-11 at Duke University, but falling at Hampden-Sydney (11-10 L 2OT) and versus Lynchburg (11-10 L). Trailing 2-0, Bas Solleveld (So., Glenmoore, PA/Shipley) scored to pull F&M within one at the 4:24 mark. Western Maryland pushed the lead back to two at 13:12 when Peter Shaffer found the back of the net for a 3-1 lead. F&M's Vandy Vanderwarker (So., Keswick, VA/STAB) scored the first of his team high four goals with 50 seconds left in the period to cut the lead back to one, but Western Maryland dumped the ball the length of the field on the ensuing faceoff as Eric Williston picked up the ground ball and flicked it into the net while being body-checked to put the Green Terror up 4-2 after one. The two teams exchanged goals in the second as Western Maryland held a 5-3 lead at halftime At 32:30 and 33:14, the Diplomats' Colin Hanley (Fr., Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) and Jon Singer (Jr., Reisterstown, MD/Boys' Latin) scored to open the third and tie the game at five all. But Ellis scored back-to-back unassisted goals at 37:30 and 38:30 to put WMC ahead 7-5 at the 38:30 mark. The remainder of the third period was all F&M as Vanderwarker scored twice, including a goal with eight seconds left on the clock, and Bryan Nolan (Jr., Scottsdale, AZ/Western Reserve) and Hanley tallied goals as the Diplomats entered the fourth holding a 9-7 lead. However, the Western Maryland attack line of Ellis, Brown and Rob Weaver scored and assisted on their team's final eight goals to manage the victory. Four and a half minutes into the final period, Brown netted an Ellis assist to start a 3-0 run capped by scores by Weaver at 50:07 and 50:20 to put Western Maryland ahead 10-9. Hanley tied the game at 10 with an unassisted score two minutes later, but Weaver and Brown scored to give the Terror a 12-10 with less than three minutes to play. Following a score by Solleveld at 58:56 to pull F&M within one, the Diplomats' offense kicked into high gear and charged down the field. Senior co-captain Andrew Kuskowski (Huntington, NY/Huntington) found a streaking Vanderwarker at the net and dished a pass to a waiting stick which beat Terror goalie Brian Nottingham high to tie the score with two seconds left on the clock and force overtime. With 2:48 left in the second overtime, Ellis spotted Brown in front of the net on an extra-man opportunity and zipped an assist for the game-winner as the Terror improved to 9-0, 4-0 in Centennial Conference play Brown led WMC with five goals and two assists, Ellis added two scores and four assists, and Weaver contributed four goals and two assists. In net, Mike Sartorius (Fr., Summit, NJ/Summit) made 14 saves, while WMC goalie Brian Nottingham recorded 17 saves as the Diplomats outshot WMC 36-33. Franklin & Marshall (6-4, 1-1 Centennial Conference) will continue the season at #3 nationally ranked Washington College on April 6.
