CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Third-ranked Washington College (7-1, 1-1 Centennial Conference) used a five goal surge in the second period to build a 6-1 lead and hang on for a 14-7 win over visiting Franklin & Marshall at Kibler Field.

Washington attackman Craig Rentch led the Shoremen with four goals and two assists in the game as the Shoremen moved ahead of the Diplomats and into third place in the Centennial Conference playoff race.

Both teams would struggle offensively in the first period as Shoreman sophomore midfielder Stephen Berger scored an unassisted tally with 8:57 to go in the opening 15 minutes for the only score. Neither team scored again until Rentch registered his first goal with 7:42 to go in the second. Berger followed with another goal 25 seconds later and Rentch gave the Shoremen a 4-0 lead with 6:24 to play in the half.

Jon Spivey made it 5-0 at the 27:44 mark before Franklin & Marshall finally found the back of the net at 29:01 when sophomore midfielder Bas Solleveld (Glen Moore, PA/Shipley School) found freshman attackman Colin Hanley (Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) for a goal to cut the Shoremen lead to 5-1. Washington rounded out the first half scoring with 10 seconds left on the clock when Rentch fed Brad Hopkins for a goal.

In the second half, the Shoremen took a 7-1 lead when Berger scored to open the third quarter 1:11 into the period. Midfielder Jon Singer (Jr., Reisterstown, MD/Boys' Latin) scored at 32:47 and attackman Steve Welsh (Fr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) scored off a feed from Andrew Kuskowski (Sr., Huntington, NY/Huntington) at 34:45 to go to cut the lead to 7-3. The Shoremen thwarted the Diplomat rally by scoring the next three goals in a span of 1:26 as Randy Vane capped the run with 7:34 to go in the third, putting WC up 10-3.

The Diplomats hounded the Shoremen by scoring four of the next five goals. With 8:56 left on the clock in the fourth, Kuskowski dished to Welsh for the freshman's second goal of the game that cut the lead to 11-7. However, the Shoremen answered right back as Rentch scored off an assist from senior Jon Fellows 28 seconds later.

Goals by junior attackman Eric Kuehn and Rentch capped off the scoring for Washington as the Shoremen remain one game back of Conference leading Gettysburg and Western Maryland.

For F&M, Singer scored three goals, while Welsh scored two goals and added an assist. Solleveld and Kuskowski each tallied two assists, and Hanley finished with one goal and one assist as the Diplomats fall to 6-5, 1-2 in Centennial Conference play.

In net, Mike Sartorius (Fr., Summit, NJ/Summit) finished with 16 saves on 32 Washington shots. Shoremen goalie Alex Pirani tallied eight saves on 24 Franklin & Marshall shots in the winning effort.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on Wednesday, April 9 at home versus Dickinson College. Start time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Sponaugle-Williamson Field.
