LANCASTER, PA -- The Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats used five second half goals to stave off a challenge by Dickinson College to pick up their 35th consecutive victory over the Red Devils in men's lacrosse, 9-7. Sophomore attackman Vandy Vanderwarker (Keswick, VA/STAB) tallied a natural hat trick with goals at 25:15, 31:12 and 51:26 as the Diplomats pulled away to hold on for the victory. Following Jon Singer (Jr., Reisterstown, MD/Boy's Latin) assisted scores by Bas Solleveld (So., Glenmoore, PA/Shipley) and Beau Smith (Jr., Baltimore, MD/Gilman) for a 2-0 lead 14:21 into the game, Dickinson's Jeremy Angell found the back of the net on a low shot which squirted between the feet of Diplomats' goalie Mike Sartorius (Fr., Summit, NJ/Summit) at 14:36 for a 2-1 lead after one period. Dickinson tied the score at two 4:02 into the second period as Dan Murray connected on a drive. Franklin & Marshall answered back with the next two scores as Steve Welsh (Fr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) and Vanderwarker ripped shots inside the right post from 10-yards out for a 4-2 lead with 4:45 left until halftime. The Red Devils' Jack Miner brought his team within one with 1:50 left on the clock as the Diplomats led 4-3 at halftime. The third period was all F&M as Vanderwarker and Hanley punched in scores before DC's Parker Sims rifled a shot into the twine for a 6-4 lead at 35:48. Following scores by Singer and Solleveld to enlarge the lead to 8-4, Miner answered with a high shot for an 8-5 score entering the fourth. Dickinson wasted little time in their comeback attempt as Jordan Seiken drove down the field and laid in his team's sixth goal of the game just 2:34 into the quarter. Vanderwarker added an insurance goal off an Andrew Kuskowski (Sr., Huntington, NY/Huntington) centering pass at 51:26 before Seiken chipped in the final score at 53:01 for the final. The game marked one of the closest in the series as Dickinson has failed to defeat the Diplomats since a 12-10 victory in Carlisle in the spring of 1967, a string of 35 consecutive defeats. Further, Dickinson has not won in Lancaster since a 10-7 victory in 1964. Statistically, the game was one of averages as Dickinson falls to 1-5 in games in which they have been held under 10 goals, while F&M improves to 4-0 in contests in which they have held their opponents under the decade mark. Franklin & Marshall (7-5, 2-2 CC) will continue the season on April 10 versus Swarthmore College. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. SCORE BY PERIODS Dickinson (5-6, 2-2 CC) 1-2-2-2 7 Franklin & Marshall (7-5, 2-2 CC) 2-2-4-1 9 Goals: F&M - Vandy Vanderwarker 3, Bas Solleveld 2, Beau Smith 1, Steve Welsh 1, Colin Hanley 1, Jon Singer 1 Dickinson - Jordan Seiken 2, Jack Miner 2, Jeremy Angell 1, Dan Murray 1, Parker Sims 1 Assists F&M - Jon Singer 2, Steve Welsh 1, Bas Solleveld 1, Andrew Kuskowski 1 Dickinson - Greg Welch 2, Matt Ringland 1, David Peer 1 Goalie (Saves/Goals Allowed) F&M - Mike Sartorius (16/7) Dickinson - Sean McGowan (25/9) Shots - F&M 40, Dickinson 20 Ground Balls - F&M 25, Dickinson 27 Face-Offs - F&M 13 of 19, Dickinson 6 of 19 Penalties - F&M 3 for 3:00, Dickinson 3 for 2:30 Extra man - F&M 1 for 4, Dickinson 1 for 3
