Diplomats Outlast Swarthmore in Men's Lacrosse, 14-9

LANCASTER, PA -- Freshman Steve Welsh (Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) scored four goals and added an assist as Franklin & Marshall kept Swarthmore at bay in the final minutes of the Centennial Conference matchup, winning the game 14-9. The game was all F&M through the first half as Vandy Vanderwarker (Keswick, VA/STAB) opened the game with a score at 5:56 to put the Diplomats up for good. Welsh built on the score with the first of his quartet of scores with 7:22 remaining in the first quarter as the Diplomats built a 3-0 lead through one period of play. The second period would be more of the same as freshman Colin Hanley (Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) scored twice in less than five minutes to spark a four goal run as the Diplomats took a 7-1 lead into halftime. Swarthmore would answer back in the second half as the Garnet opened the third quarter with a score by Swarthmore's John Cleaver. Franklin & Marshall responded answer with three consecutive goals by Vanderwalker at 31:33, Jon Singer (Jr., Reisterstown, MD/Boy's Latin) at 32:26 and 33:54 by Welsh. With 8:45 remaining in the third quarter and the score 11-3, the Garnet would score five consecutive goals to pull within three of the Diplomats at 11-8. The Diplomats pulled away in the fourth as Singer scored with 4:50 remaining in the game. Hanley and Welsh added late scores to put the game away as F&M improves to 5-0 in contests in which they have held their opponents under 10 goals. Franklin & Marshall (8-5, 3-2 CC) will continue the season at home on April 20 versus #2 Gettysburg College.
