LANCASTER, PA - Following wins over Ursinus College and Denison University, the Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse team jumped three spots to #22 in the STX Division III Poll for the opening weeks of the 2003 season. Ranked #25 in the preseason poll, F&M opened the season with a 21-3 victory at Swarthmore College versus Ursinus behind six goals and two assists from Bryan Nolan (Sr., Hudson, OH/Western Reserve) as the Diplomats built a 6-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. In the squad's second game, Colin Hanley (So., Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) and Beau Smith (Sr., Baltimore, MD/Gilman) scored four goals apiece to lead the Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse team to a 12-7 victory over Denison University. Trailing 1-0 following a goal by the Big Red's Greg Mavraganis 1:02 into the game, Franklin & Marshall responded with seven unanswered goals, including a four-minute hat trick by Smith. Denison cut the lead to 7-2 when Mavraganis added his second of three unassisted goals, but Hanley completed a hat trick with a goal off a feed from All-America selection Jon Singer (Sr., Reisterstown, MD/Boys' Latin) with 4:10 left until halftime as the Diplomats carried an 8-1 advantage into intermission on their way to the five goal victory. A 2001 Honorable Mention and 2002 Second Team All-Centennial Conference selection, Singer has been the Diplomats' most proficient offensive weapon the last two years as the 2002 season marked the second year he led the Diplomats in goals scored as Singer recorded 27 as a sophomore and 24 last year. On the year, Singer leads the team in scoring with four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. The March 10 Centennial Conference Player of the Week and a 2003 Inside Lacrosse: Face-Off Magazine Yearbook Preseason Honorable Mention All-America selection, Singer tallied two goals and five assists versus both Ursinus and Denison to raise his career numbers to 70-35-10530 goals short of surpassing Paul Friedman '75 (99) for eighth place in goals scored in F&M program history In goal, keeper Mike Sartorius (So., Summit, NJ/Summit) has been rock-steady for the Diplomats allowing nine goals in 90 minutes of play while recording 24 saves. Franklin & Marshall (2-0, 1-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on March 13 at the University of Maryland versus Marymount University.
