LANCASTER, PA - Five Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse players are listed among the 2004 Face-Off Yearbook Division III Preseason All-America Team announced recently. Face-Off Yearbook is an annual publication produced by Inside Lacrosse. Leading the charge for Franklin & Marshall in the 2004 season will be third team preseason All-America selections Matt Capone (Jr., Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) and Dave Taler (Sr., Baltimore, MD/Gilman School). A face-off specialist, Capone will look to improve on his 2003 season performance as he established the NCAA record holder in all divisions (I, II and III) in face-off winning percentage at 71.4 percent (254-of-357) while earning All-Centennial Conference first team honors last year. Against Gettysburg, he won 26-of-31 face-offs and collected 18 ground balls as the Diplomats downed the then defending national runner-ups, 15-12. The anchor of the Diplomats' defense, Taler was instrumental as F&M finished fourth in the Centennial Conference in scoring defense (7.88 gpg) and man-down percentage (77.6 percent). On the honorable mention team, attackman Steve Welsh (Jr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) and midfielders Colin Hanley (Jr., Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) and Bas Solleveld (Sr., Glenmoore, PA/Shipley School) should repeat their 2003 performances again this year. At midfield, Solleveld tallied 23-11-34 in 2003, including 15-6-21 in Conference play, to raise his career numbers to 49-23-72 and earn All-Centennial Conference second team honors. As a sophomore, he chipped in 22-5-27, including eight goals and four assists in Centennial Conference games, to earn All-CC Honorable Mention honors. Joining Solleveld at midfield, Hanley finished second on the team in goals last year with 29, eight of the pace of 2003 All-America selection Bryan Nolan '03, and fifth in scoring with 42 points courtesy 13 assists. In Centennial Conference games, he finished the year with 14-7-21 His most memorable goal occurred on May 12, 2003 at Lynchburg College as he scored an unassisted tally at the 63:19 mark as the Diplomats overcame a two goal deficit with 43 seconds left in regulation to stun #6 ranked Lynchburg 13-12 in overtime in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championships. Due to his goal, the game marked F&M's first postseason victory in the NCAA tournament since the 1988 team advanced to the Final Four. For his career, Hanley now has 48-21-69 as he is on pace to possibly become the first Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse player to score 100 career goals since Chris Mergardt '96 (192) and Don Gervais' 96 (126) became the sixth and seventh players to accomplish the feat. At attack, Welsh was deadly for the Diplomats last year tallying 23-27-50, including 12-13-25 in Centennial Conference games, to finish second in assists and points, three assists and six points off the pace of 2003 All-America selection Jon Singer '03. Against Lynchburg in the NCAA playoffs, Welsh led the team with four goals and an assist as he now has 44-35-79 to rank with Hanley as potential 100-goal scorers by the time their careers conclude. Overall, Franklin & Marshall College tied with Washington College for the most preseason All-America selections among Centennial Conference institutions as the Diplomats and Shoremen registered 10 of the Conference's 12 selections as Gettysburg and McDaniel each received one nod. Ranked 12th in the 2004 Inside Lacrosse Division III men's lacrosse preseason poll, the Diplomats concluded the 2003 season with a 12-4 record, 6-2 in Centennial Conference play, as Franklin & Marshall finished fifth in the nation, ranked #9 in the final USILA Division III national poll and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament. In the tournament, F&M advanced to the quarterfinals before being defeated by eventual national champion Salisbury University. The NCAA playoff berth marked the third in program history (1988, 1990, and 1995) as the team recorded the program's best record since the 1988 team went 13-3 and advanced to the "Final Four". Out of Conference during the regular season, F&M finished undefeated knocking off Denison (12-7 W), Marymount (17-3 W), Washington & Lee (5-4 W), Randolph Macon (11-6 W) and Goucher (10-6 W) for a perfect 5-0 record as the Diplomats played the 12th toughest schedule in the nation according to the final LaxPower.com Power Rankings. Franklin & Marshall was the only Centennial Conference school to defeat Washington & Lee last year as Gettysburg and Washington fell by 10-9 and 6-5 finals to the Generals, respectively. Further, the win marked F&M's first over W&L since a 10-9 overtime win at home on Sponaugle-Williamson Field on March 30, 1996. Historically, the men's lacrosse program is one of the strongest in NCAA Division III as F&M has registered nine conference championships in the last thirty years with a 47-year record of 314-301. 2004 Face-Off Yearbook Division III Preseason All-Americans First Team A Michael Saraceni SR Middlebury A Brandon Childs SR Lynchburg A Kris Davis SR Roanoke M Andy Murray SR Salisbury M Stephen Berger SR Washington M Andrew Roth SR Cortland LSM Sean White JR Salisbury D John West SR Middlebury D Eric Martin SR Salisbury D Jeff Bigas JR Salisbury D Kyle Mitten JR Washington G Richard Yost SR Washington Second Team A Chris Phillips JR Salisbury A Andrew Hyatt SR Cortland A Taylor Brown SO Springfield M Greg Bastis SR Middlebury M Dustin Martin SR W & L M Corey O’Neil SR Salisbury LSM Andrew Laskowski SR Hamilton D Frank Estrella SR Cortland D Aaron Jaffe JR Whittier D Kurt Federer JR Denison D Josh Hanlon SR McDaniel G Eric Krieger SR Middlebury Third Team A Ryder Bateman SR Whittier A Brian Griffin JR Tufts A Bryan Coon JR Nazareth M Dan Reed JR Roanoke M Matt Casey JR Ithaca F/O Matt Capone JR F & M LSM Austin Vandeveer SR Ohio Wesleyan D Greg Vetter JR Washington D Chris Webber JR Goucher D Sean Harrington JR Springfield D Dave Taler SR F & M G Reeves Craig JR Goucher Honorable Mention Attack: A Alex Casetano JR Amherst A John Schlegel JR Ohio Wesleyan A Kevin Reinecke SR Lynchburg A Sang Duong SR Lycoming A Billy McCulloch JR Lynchburg A Lucas Ruglis SR Rensselaer A Kyle Lambert SO Cortland A Adam Hughes SR Cortland A Adam LoGiudice SO Rensselaer A Steve Welsh JR F & M A Tim Loveless SR St. Lawrence A Dan Geiger SR Hamilton Midfield: M Bas Solleveld SR F & M M Peter Dolan SR St. Lawrence M Alex Moore JR St. Lawrence M Devin Clarke JR Tufts M Ryan McCauley JR St. Mary’s M Colin Hanley JR F & M M Nick Purkat SR Gettysburg M Adam Cost JR Springfield M Ryan Frisch JR Rensselaer M Scott Simmons SR Salisbury F/O James Gallucci SR Rensselaer F/O Josh Marksberry SR Ithaca F/O Seth McNally JR Ohio Wesleyan F/O Scott McAlee SO Lynchburg LSM/Defense: LSM Matt Grande SR Stevens Tech LSM Ryan Fassnacht JR Hamp.-Sydney D Matt Harrison JR Whittier D Chad Clark SO Lynchburg D Chris Cimini JR Nazareth D Matt Krug SR Washington D Doug Freeman SR Ohio Wesleyan D Rob Gifis SR Hamilton D Lawson Grumbine SR W & L D Ben Love SO Roanoke Goalie: G Ansel Sanders SR W & L G Jeremy Bull JR Hamp.-Sydney G Joe Zebrowski JR Clarkson G Jason Mleczko SR Hamilton
