HOBOKEN, NJ -- Stevens Institute of Technology midfielder Alex Richards scored three goals in the third quarter and midfielder Matt Kuppe scored three fourth-quarter goals to rally the Ducks to a 13-11 win over ninth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College in non-conference men's lacrosse action. F&M (1-1, 0-0 Centennial Conference) held a 5-2 lead at halftime and led 7-4 with 6:05 left in the third quarter following a goal by attackman Steve Welsh (Jr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen). However, Stevens (2-0) stormed back with three goals in a span of 1:27 to tie the game. Richards scored unassisted goals at 3:55 and again at 3:11 before Eliot Dahood converted an extra-man goal off an assist from Mark Bielicky to knot the game at 7-7 with 2:28 left in the third quarter. F&M regained the lead heading into the fourth quarter when attackman Mike Down (Fr., Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) scored during a three-man advantage with 50 seconds left in the third quarter. Stevens stormed back by opening the fourth quarter with three goals in the first five minutes to take the lead for good. Kuppe tied the game at 8-8 with 13:38 left on the clock and then assisted on the go-ahead goal by midfielder Jay Wells with 12:36 remaining. Midfielder Eric Reckdenwald, who finished with two goals and two assists, gave the Ducks a two-goal lead with 10:40 left. F&M twice cut the Stevens lead to one goal. Midfielder Colin Hanley (Jr., Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) scored an unassisted goal with 5:52 left to pull the Diplomats to within 11-10. Kuppe sealed the win for the Ducks by scoring two goals in a span of 10 seconds as he finished a pass from Dahood with 2:13 left and then picked a ground ball off a face-off and scored again at the 2:03 mark to put Stevens in front 13-10. Hanley added another goal with 1:17 left to pull the Diplomats to within two goals. Franklin & Marshall had a chanced to pull within a goal with 45 second left, but were unable to convert on a man-up opportunity for the 13-11 final. Stevens held a 47-35 advantage in shots and a 43-40 margin in ground balls, while the Diplomats' Matt Capone (Jr., Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) won 21-of-27 face-offs in the effort. For F&M, Hanley finished with four goals, while Welsh added three goals and two assists. In addition, midfielder Bas Solleveld (Sr., Glenmoore, PA/Shipley) chipped in one goal and an assist, attackmen Cyrus Adams (Fr., Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell) netted two goals and an assist, attackman Chris Wathey (Sr., South Huntington, NY/St. Anthony's) added two assists and Down tallied one goal and one assist to round out the F&M scorers. The key to the game was extra man opportunities as the Ducks converted on three-of-seven while the Diplomats finished two-of-four. In goal, the Ducks' Matt Cannon stopped 17 shots, while F&M's Mike Sartorius (Jr., Summit, NJ/Summit) notched 15 saves. Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on March 13 at home versus Washington & Lee.
