Capone, Welsh, Sartorius & Wathey Rank Among Leaders in Final CC Men's Lacrosse Statistics

LANCASTER, PA -- Face-off specialist Matt Capone (Jr., Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale), attackmen Steve Welsh (Jr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) and Chris Wathey (Sr., South Huntington, NY/St. Anthony) and goalie Mike Sartorius (Jr., Summit, NJ/Summit) rank among the leaders in the final Centennial Conference men's lacrosse statistics for the 2004 season.
The NCAA all-division record holder in face-off winning percentage
after recording an 80.4 percentage last season, Capone led
the Centennial Conference in 2004 by wining 211 of 275 face-offs
for a 76.72 percentage. A 2003 and 2004 All-Centennial Conference
first team selection, he tallied his first collegiate goal
as he scored on Washington & Lee's Ansel Sanders in the third
quarter for an insurance goal in a 5-3 win over the Old Dominion
Athletic Conference champion Generals.
An All-Centennial Conference first team selection at attack, Welsh led the team in scoring registering 21 goals and a season high 31 assists for 52 points to rank third in points (3.71 per game) and second in assists (2.21 per game). For his career, he now has 65 goals and 66 assists for 131 points. Statistically, Welsh was the team's go-to scorer this season as he scored once and handed out two assists in a 5-3 victory over Washington & Lee at home in Lancaster. The win marked the Diplomats first over the Generals in Lancaster since a 10-9 overtime win on Sponaugle-Williamson Field on March 30, 1996 as F&M improved to 8-10 all-time against the Generals. His most memorable game of the season occurred on April 21 as he scored twice in the final eight minutes of play for the game-winner and an insurance goal as the Diplomats defeated Dickinson 7-5 in Centennial Conference action. Welsh's game-winner with 8:21 left on the clock marked the second year in a row the junior attackman scored the game-winner against the Red Devils as he scored twice and handed out three assists in a 11-9 win in Carlisle on April 19, 2003. Versus Denison at Loyola University in Baltimore, Welsh scored four goals and handed out four assists for a season high eight points in a 12-10 win over the Big Red on March 20, before tallying a goal and four assists in a 10-3 win over Ursinus in the Centennial Conference season opener on March 20 in Lancaster. Also at attack, Wathey tied for ninth in goal scoring tallying 28 goals in 14 goals (2.0 per game) and placed 10th in points per game (3.21) as he added 17 assists for 45 points on the year to conclude his career with 44 goals and 34 assists for 78 points. In goal, Sartorius ranked third in save percentage (60.2%) and goals against average (7.34 per game) as he made 157 saves with 104 goals allowed in 807 minutes of play. As a team, F&M ranked fifth in scoring offense (9.50 goals per game), third in scoring defense (7.57 goals per game), fifth in man-up percentage (18 goals-on-56 attempts, 32.1%) and seventh in man-down percentage (48 stops-on-72 attempts, 66.7%). Franklin & Marshall concluded the season with a 9-5 record as the Diplomats finished fifth in the Centennial Conference.
