SWARTHMORE, PA -- Midfielder Colin Hanley (Sr., Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) buried an assist from attackman Steve Welsh (Sr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) under the right arm and stick of Widener goalie Andrew Johnson as the #22 Franklin & Marshall College knocked off the Pioneers 9-8 in overtime in non-conference men’s lacrosse action at Swarthmore College.

The Diplomats took an early 2-0 lead in the game as attackman Cyrus Adams (So., Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell) scored off assists from midfielder Phil Schellhorn (So., Wilton, CT/Wilton) and Welsh at 13:29 and 10:33 of the first period. The Pioneers halved the lead at 7:11 as midfielder Luke Weber scored on an assist from attackman Todd Fairlie for a man-up goal.

However, attackman Noah Wilkinsky (Fr., Ardmore, PA/Valley Forge Military) broke free and beat Johnson with a shot at 5:12 for a 3-1 lead before Franklin & Marshall added another goal with two seconds remaining in the period as midfielder Kevin Kohl (So., Manasquan, NJ/Loomis Chaffee) found the back of the net with an unassisted blast for a 4-1 lead through 15 minutes of play.

Widener responded in the second period with four unanswered goals to take a 5-4 lead into halftime

The Pioneers received a break in the opening minutes of the second period as F&M was penalized for an illegal stick. Widener turned the break into a pair of goals as Gavin Goane scored off an assist from Fairlie at 12:52. Down two men after an unnecessary roughness call on the goal, the Diplomats could not stop midfielder Tim Heffernan who scored an unassisted goal 27 seconds after Goane’s score to cut the lead to 4-3 with 12:25 left in the period.

Attackman Brian Stromko scored the tying goal off an assist from attackman Alan Krawitz with 7:24 left in the second period before attackman Dennis Mann tallied an unassisted goal with 6:54 left in the period for a 5-4 lead at intermission.

The Pioneers expanded the lead to 6-4 at the 14:25 mark of the third period as Fairlie buried a shot to end Widener’s five goal run.

The teams traded goals as Welsh beat Johnson with an unassisted shot at 7:49 before Goane netted his second goal of the day for Widener with 16 seconds left in the period off an assist by Fairlie on a man-up opportunity.

In the fourth period, Franklin & Marshall responded as J.B. Robichau (Sr., Edgartown, MA/Tabor) ripped a shot into the twine off an assist from Welsh with 11:00 left to pull the Diplomats to within one goal. However, Goane finished the Pioneers’ scoring with an unassisted goal with 5:43 left to push his team to an 8-6 lead.

Needing a goal, face-off specialist Matt Capone (Sr., Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) collected a ground ball and scored 11 seconds after Goane to put Franklin & Marshall within one goal of tying the game.

The Diplomats tied the game at the 3:12 remaining on the game clock as Welsh finished a feed from Kohl for an 8-8 tie at the end of regulation.

Neither team could score in overtime before Hanley found the back of the cage with 1:54 left in the extra frame for the 9-8 victory.

For F&M, Welsh finished with two goals and three assists to increase his career numbers to 68 goals and 72 assists as he surpassed Jon Bloom ’96 (71) for ninth in career assists at the College.

Adams added two goals, while Wilkinsky, Kohl, Robichau, Hanley, Capone and Hanley each added single scores as F&M improved to 2-0 to open a season for the first time since the team reeled off a 8-0 run to open the 2003 season.

In goal, Mike Sartorius (Sr., Summit, NJ/Summit) made 18 saves on 40 Widener shots, while the Pioneers’ Johnson stopped 12 of the Diplomats’ 33 shots.

The victory marks the first in Franklin & Marshall history against Widener as the Diplomats entered the game with a 0-3 mark against the Pioneers, including a 21-10 loss on March 20, 2000 in the two teams last meeting.

Franklin & Marshall (2-0, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on March 12 at #9 Washington & Lee University as the Diplomats will look to become the first Centennial Conference school to knock off the Generals this year as #7 Gettysburg (9-8 L) and #5 Washington (7-6 L) have fallen at W&L. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
