LANCASTER, PA -- Leading 6-1 entering the fourth period, the Franklin & Marshall College men’s lacrosse team needed a goal by midfielder Peter Moon (So., Durham, NC/Durham) to break a 6-6 tie with 1:57 left on the game clock and lift the Diplomats to a 7-6 win over Goucher College in non-conference men’s lacrosse action at Sponaugle-Williamson Field.

Leading by five goals entering the period, the Diplomats (4-2, 0-0 Centennial Conference) saw their lead dwindle to a 6-6 tie with 3:02 left in regulation as the Gophers dominated the final 15 minutes of play out shooting Franklin & Marshall 16-3, including an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal

Goucher (2-7, 1-2 Capital Athletic Conference) began to cut into F&M’s lead in the fourth period as Dave Duff finished a pass from Ross Nochumowitz at 8:48 to pull the Gophers to within 6-2.

The Gophers then tallied back-to-back man-up goals as Alan Tiet found the back of the cage off a pass from Sam Fitzpatrick at 8:12 and Shea ripped an assist from Dan Flamholz under the crossbar to trim the Diplomats’ lead to 6-4.

Tiet and Shea factored in the next two scores as Tiet registered an unassisted goal at 3:50 and Shea threaded a pass to Mike Zirrolli for a score at 3:02 to tie the score at 6-6 and set up Moon’s heroics in the final two minutes of play.

Franklin & Marshall controlled the game in the first period to take the lead as David Steiner (Fr., Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) netted an unassisted goal with 12:42 left in the period. Bobby Atkins (So., Concord, MA/Loomis Chaffee) scored on a feed from Mike Down (Jr., Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) at 7:12 and Mark Hild (Fr., Denver, CO/Denver East) tallied a score on an assist from Henry Kusjanovic (Sr., Armonk, NY/Byram Hills) with 41 seconds left in the period as the Diplomats finished the first 15 minutes of play with a 3-0 lead.

Goucher cut the lead to 3-1 in the second half as Dan Flamholz found Binz Hansen for a score with 7:37 left until halftime before Phil Schellhorn (Jr., Wilton, CT/Wilton) scored on a feed from Hild at the 2:10 mark for a 4-1 F&M lead at the break.

In the second half, Noah Wilkinsky (So., Ardmore, PA/Valley Forge Military Academy) added to the lead with a man-up goal courtesy a feed from Hild at the 5:51 mark before Atkins hit Steiner for a goal with 4:42 left in the third period for a 6-1 lead entering the final 15 minutes of play.

Steiner led the Diplomats with two goals, while Hild added a goal and an assist and Atkins chipped in a goal and an assist to lead Franklin & Marshall College to its fourth win of the year.

In goal, Tim Kjeldgaard (So., Yarmouth, ME/Hyde) made 13 saves on 29 shots in 60 minutes to earn the win, while Goucher’s Austin Main made 12 saves on 24 shots to take the loss.

The win improves the Diplomats to 8-1 all-time against Goucher in men’s lacrosse as the Gophers have not defeated the Franklin & Marshall since 1998.
