CHESTER, PA -- Attackman Dennis Mann scored six goals to lead Widener University to a 14-5 win over Franklin & Marshall College in non-conference men’s lacrosse action.

Overall, Mann tallied three goals in the first period, two in the second period and one in the third period as the Pioneers rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to take their first win over Franklin & Marshall since 2000.

Franklin & Marshall jumped out to the lead in the game as Mark Hild (Fr., Denver, CO/Denver East) finished a pass from Kevin Kohl (Jr., Manasquan, NJ/Loomis Chaffee) at the 13:18 mark of the first half.

Widener responded as Chris Matthews ripped an unassisted goal into the twine at 12:28 to knot the score. The Pioneers took the lead less than a minute later as Mann tallied a goal off a pass from Alan Krawitz to go ahead 2-1 at the 11:49 mark.

Peter Moon (So., Durham, NC/Durham) fired in a pass from Kohl at 7:50 to tie the score at 2-2, but Mann tallied back-to-back scores off assists from Todd Fairle and Matthews at 6:17 and 4:59, respectively, to put the Pioneers in front to stay.

The teams traded goals to close out the first period as Hild beat Widener goalie Mike Cozza for an unassisted goal with 4:37 left in the period and Matthews found the back of the net with 2:22 left to keep Widener ahead 5-3.

The goal ignited a climatic run by the Pioneers as Widener scored 10 consecutive goals to go ahead 14-3 with 9:06 left in the fourth period.

Franklin & Marshall closed the gap to nine goals in the closing minutes of the period as Bobby Atkins (So., Concord, MA/Loomis Chaffee) beat back-up goalie Andrew Johnson with 1:28 to play and Moon finished a centering pass from Hild with 15 seconds left on the clock for the 14-5 final score.

In goal, Tim Kjeldgaard (So., Yarmouth, ME/Hyde) took the loss making nine saves and allowing 14 goals on 27 shots in his first intercollegiate start, while Cozza picked up the win playing 52 minutes with eight saves and three goals allowed. Johnson finished out the game making one save and allowing two goals in the final eight minutes as the Pioneers improve to 1-1 on the year.

Statistically, the Diplomats held advantages in ground balls (25-to-23) and shots (34-to-29), but Widener put 24 of their shots on goal while the Diplomats managed 14 shots on goal.

Historically, Franklin & Marshall is 1-4 all-time against Widener as the Diplomats knocked off the Pioneers 9-8 OT last year at Swarthmore College.
