LANCASTER, PA McDaniel College used unassisted goals by David Long, Todd Knepper and Donzell Tate to hold off Franklin & Marshall 3-1 in the Centennial Conference mens soccer opener for both teams. The Green Terror jumped on the board with 18:33 left in the first half as Long finished a long ball over the top of a pile in front of the goal for a 1-0 lead entering halftime. In the second half, Knepper connected on the game-winner as he fired a shot one-on-one with the goalkeeper with 34:20 left on the game clock to put McDaniel up 2-0. Tate added an insurance goal with 19:17 as he fired a cross which deflected off a Franklin & Marshall defender and into the net for a 3-0 lead. The Diplomats (1-1-3, 0-1 Centennial Conference) rallied in the closing minutes of the game as Jason Keil (So., Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) ripped a left-footed shot which bent into the lower right corner of the goal and past an outstretched McDaniel goalie Andrew Wu to pull F&M to within 3-1 with 10:47 left on the clock. However, the Green Terror defense held off the Diplomats in the closing minutes of the game to improve to 4-2 on the season, 1-0 in Centennial Conference play. In goal, Sandy Welsch (Jr., Fallston, MD/Fallston) made two second half saves in his first intercollegiate start for the Diplomats, while Wu stopped five shots to earn the win. Franklin & Marshall (1-1-3, 0-1 CC) will continue the season on September 22 at York College of Pennsylvania.
