LANCASTER, PA – Gettysburg College scored twice in the final 21 minutes of play to hold off Franklin & Marshall College 2-0 in Centennial Conference men’s soccer at Baker Field. The Bullets and Diplomats battled back-and-forth throughout the first half as Franklin & Marshall held a 7-3 advantage in shots in the first half but could not convert on their chances. Gettysburg broke the stalemate at the 79:14 mark as midfielder Garrett Bruno finished a cross from forward Cameron Bonfield with a shot into the lower left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead and all the Bullets (6-4-2, 3-1-1 Centennial Conference) would need to record their sixth victory of the season.
The Diplomats subbed out goalie Ed Stelz (Jr., Kew Gardens,
NY/Loomis Chaffee) and replaced him with Sandy Welsch (Jr.,
Fallston, MD/Fallston) at the 86:37 mark to stop the clock,
but Gettysburg forward Jes Johnson blasted an arching shot
from 20 yards out which sailed into the upper right corner
of the goal for a 2-0 lead just six seconds later to seal
the win.
In goal, Stelz made four saves to take the loss, while Gettysburg’s Nick Wells-Bundtzen notched 10 saves in the win. Franklin & Marshall (3-4-3, 2-3 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on October 12 at Susquehanna University in non-conference action.
