LANCASTER, PA – Franklin & Marshall College pitcher Bonnie Crouthamel (So., Chatham, NJ/Chatham) allowed three runs on seven hits and six walks with five strikeouts to earn the win in game one as the Diplomats split a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader versus McDaniel College winning 5-3 in the opening game and falling 7-1 in the nightcap at Baker Field.

Crouthamel’s win marks the first time the Diplomats (4-19, 1-3 Centennial Conference) have defeated the Green Terror (11-11, 2-2 Centennial Conference) in softball since a 5-1 victory on March 27, 1993 to snap a string of 26 consecutive defeats by McDaniel.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning against reliever Mary Abrams, the Diplomats plated the winning runs with two outs as Leah Pearlman-Storch (Jr., Bala Cynwyd, PA/Friends Central) walked and stole second base, Jessika Mancino (Fr., Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) doubled down the left field line to drive in Pearlman-Storch and Dana Johns (Sr., York, PA/Eastern York) singled to left field to plate Mancino with the winning run for a 4-3 lead.

F&M tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as Mancino beat out an infield single and circled the bases on a throwing error by Abrams, who tossed the ball down the right field line attempting to make a play on the hit, for the 5-3 final.

McDaniel threatened in the seventh as the Green Terror loaded the bases with two outs before Crouthamel got Karyn Curley to bounce back to the circle for the final out at first base.

The Green Terror led three times in the game as McDaniel scored solo runs in the first, third and fourth innings, while Franklin & Marshall tied the score in the bottom of the first and third before taking the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth.

In the first, McDaniel’s Diane Rosemier singled and stole second base. Abrams walked to put runners on first and second with two outs, but Emily Trainor singled to left centerfield to drive in Rosemier for a 1-0 lead.

The Diplomats answered in the bottom of the inning as Crouthamel singled to centerfield with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Lauren Incorvaia (Fr., Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney).

McDaniel regained the lead in the third inning as Abrams reached on a fielder’s choice and Megan Mitchell singled to right field with two outs to put runners on first and second. Trainor drove in Abrams with an RBI single to left centerfield as the Green Terror went ahead 2-1.

Franklin & Marshall tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Mancino singled through the left side and stole second base before Johns singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Johns stole second and Crouthamel grounded out to leave runners on second and third with one out before Incorvaia singled to score Mancino to knot the game at 2-2. Rosemier prevented the Diplomats from taking the lead in the inning as she threw Johns out at the plate from deep centerfield to keep the game tied going into the climatic fourth inning.

At the plate, Mancino finished three-for-three with three runs scored and an RBI, while Incorvaia went two-for-three with two RBI to lead the Diplomats.

For McDaniel, Trainor was two-for-three with two RBI and Rosemier finished two-for-four with a run scored.

Abrams took the loss for McDaniel allowing three runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in relief of starter Jessica Smith who permitted two runs on five hits and a walk with one strikeout.

In game two, designated player Whitney Williams finished three-for-four with two RBI and a run scored and pitcher Nichol Moeller went the distance allowing one run on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts as the Green Terror notched a 7-1 victory.

The Green Terror jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the game as McDaniel used four hits to score a pair of runs in the second and five hits and an error to plate five runs in the fourth.

Franklin & Marshall scored its run in the bottom of the fourth as Robyn Jones (Jr., Titusville, NJ/Pennington) blasted her first intercollegiate homerun and the team’s sixth of the season over the fence in left centerfield.

Ali Tyler (So., Ridgewood, PA/Ridgewood) took the loss for the Diplomats allowing seven runs on 10 hits and a walk in three innings of work.

Meredith Morgan (Fr., Phoenixville, PA/Owen J. Roberts) led the Diplomats at the plate going two-for-three with a double.

Franklin & Marshall (4-19, 1-3 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 8 at Muhlenberg College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
