LANCASTER, PA -- Setter Jen Grue (So., Canton, PA/Canton) had 45 assists, and Emily Green (Sr., Woodstock, NY/Woodstock) chipped in 13 kills and 20 digs, but it was not enough as the University of Scranton went the full five games in downing Franklin & Marshall College 16-30, 30-28, 31-29, 25-30, 15-13 in the Mayser Center on Monday night. F&M would dominate the Royals in the early going, running out to a 15-0 lead in the first game before Scranton made it respectable in a 30-16 F&M win. But the Royals wouldn't roll over as they stormed back to take the next two games 30-28 and 31-29 to put the Diplomats on the brink of defeat. Down as many as five points at times, F&M would claw back into the match by rattling off the final four points of the fourth game to take a 30-25 decision and force a decisive game five. In game five, the two teams would slug it out down the stretch as Scranton pulled ahead 8-6. The Royals would retain the lead to 13-11 before F&M pulled even at 13. A service error would give the Royals their 14th point and a spike by Scranton's Christine Fontaine (Sr., Norristown, PA/Gwynedd Mercy) would five the Royals their first win over F&M since 1989. Kristen Kowalski (Jr., York, PA/Central York) and Heidi Goedicke (Jr., Spring Church, PA/Elderton) had 10 kills, while Liz Earll (Fr., New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) netted 10 kills and five blocks. In the all-time series, Scranton now holds a 6-2 advantage over F&M. F&M will continue the season at home on September 19th versus Dickinson College in the Centennial Conference season opener.
