6/7/02

LANCASTER, PA -- The Franklin & Marshall College Department of Athletics and Recreation has announced the schedule of games for the 2002 women's volleyball season.

Beginning on August 31st in their own F&M Scramble, the Diplomats will play multiple regionally ranked programs during the 21 date regular season looking to extend a program record streak of six consecutive 20-win seasons.

In their season opening tournament, Franklin & Marshall will host Buffalo State, Salisbury, MIT, Moravian, Johns Hopkins, Eastern and Susquehanna before hitting the road on September 4 to visit local rival Elizabethtown College.

The highlight of the Diplomats schedule will be their participation in the Colorado College Tournament in Boulder, Colorado on September 6-7, before returning to the Mayser Center to face Lebanon Valley College (9/11).

Following a weekend trip to compete in the University of Scranton Invitational on September 13-14, the team return home to face York College (9/16) before opening the 2002 Centennial Conference season with a match versus Bryn Mawr (9/19). The team will remain in Lancaster on September 21 to host Elmira, Messiah, DeSales, Alvernia and Widener in the F&M Invitational.

Road matches at Dickinson (9/25) and Washington with Haverford (9/28) round out the team's first full month of play as the Diplomats return to the court on October 4-5 at the Cortland Inter-Regional Tournament. Back-to-back conference road matches versus Swarthmore (10/9) and Ursinus (10/11) set up a critical match for the Diplomats as second year head coach Nicole Goscilo will face her alma mater, Muhlenberg College, on October 16 in Lancaster.

The team will conclude the month with a road tournament at Widener (10/19) and a pair of home games versus McDaniel (10/23) and Johns Hopkins (10/26), before travelling to face 2001 CC champion Gettysburg (10/30) at the historic battlefield.

In November, the team will look to improve their lot at the Messiah Invitational (11/2) before possibly competing in the Centennial Conference Championships on November 9th.

Leading the way for the Diplomats will be tri-captains Jen Grue (Jr., Canton, PA/Canton), Heidi Goedicke (Sr., Spring Church, PA/Elderton) and Rose Hartmann (Sr., Warminster, PA/William Tennent).

Hartmann returns to the Diplomats lineup after missing portions of the last two seasons with injuries. Despite sitting out portions of the 2001 season, she tallied 212 kills in 101 games and led the team in blocks with 79, including 43 solo. She currently ranks fourth all-time at the College in blocks with 211, 162 off the school record of 373 held by Stacy Dunchick '00 (373).

An outside hitter, Goedicke enters her senior year following an All-Conference second team performance last year in which she led the team in kills (3.12) and digs (4.21) per game. A multi-talented player, she enters 2002 with a career total of 808 kills, 114 service aces and 1,197 digs, as she joined nine other Diplomats who have achieved 1,000 digs in a career.

The Diplomats' returning setter, Grue earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors after leading the Conference in assists per game (10.98) as a sophomore.

Admission to all F&M regular season home volleyball games is free and open to the public.
