LANCASTER, PA - The Franklin & Marshall College volleyball team led by All-Tournament team selection Rose Hartmann (Sr., Warminster, PA/William Tennet) finished third in the annual F&M Scramble.

The Diplomats opened the 2002 Scramble against Buffalo State out of the State University of New York Athletic Conference. F&M split the first two games of the match 30-27 and 22-30 before claiming the last two games 30-18 and 30-24.

Moravian was next up for the Diplomats in the semifinals of the winner's bracket as the Greyhounds swept Franklin & Marshal 30-24, 30-18 and 30-19 to send F&M into the third place game.

Versus Centennial Conference foe Johns Hopkins, F&M jumped out to a quick lead to take the first game 30-16. The Blue Jays bounced back to even the match up at one game apiece winning the second game 30-22. Franklin & Marshall swept the next two games 30-20, 30-26 to capture the third place trophy.

Eastern University came away with the Tournament championship by defeating Moravian three games to one (30-26, 30-28, 18-30 and 36-34). Eastern started its day versus Susquehanna University. The Eagles used a solid effort from MVP Kate Adams as Eastern swept the Crusaders 30-23, 30-24 and 30-22. Johns Hopkins was next on the list for the Eagles. After splitting the first two games Johns Hopkins could not come back after giving up 12 straight points in the third game and thirteen straight in the fourth and deciding game.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology suffered a tough five game loss to Johns Hopkins in the first round yet played their way back to win the consolation finals for fifth place. The Engineers tied the score up at two games a piece after trailing by two games. The fifth game was a battle with Hopkins taking the last six points. MIT used the close defeat to their advantage by not giving up a single game in their last two matches. The Engineers defeated Susquehanna 30-17, 30-27 and 30-22. In the consolation final MIT faced Salisbury University. The Sea Gulls were no match for MIT dropping the match 30-28, 30-25 and 30-21.

For the Diplomats Rose Hartmann had 18 kills, one block and five aces against Buffalo State and three blocks, 10 kills and nine digs against Johns Hopkins.

F&M will continue their season next weekend as they travel to Colorado to play in the Colorado College tournament.
