Lancaster, Pa.- Head coach Nicole Goscilo returns for her second year at the helm of the Dipomat volleyball team looking to lead the squad to their sixth consecutive 20-plus win season and appearance in the postseason. Last year the Diplomats reached the semifinals of the ECAC South Championships before falling to Grove City to end the season 22-11. Leading the charge for the 2002 Diplomats will be tri-captains Rose Hartmann (Sr., Warminster, PA/ William Tennet), Heidi Goedicke (Jr., Spring Church, PA/ Elderton) and Jen Grue (Jr., Canton, PA/ Canton). Goedicke returns for her senior year as one of the best outside hitters in the Centennial Conference as she earned second team All Centennial Conference honors for her play leading the team in kills (3.12) and digs (4.21) per game last year. Among the Conference leaders in kills (356) and digs (491), Goedicke now has a career total of 1,197 digs 808 kills, and 114 aces. During her junior year she reached the 1,000 digs plateau, joining only nine other Diplomats who have achieved this feat. Grue returns to run the offense, having led the Centennial Conference in assists per game last season to earn All-Conference Honorable Mention. She currently ranks fourth on the all-time career assist, and broke the all-time record for assists-per-game average in a season, with 10.98 in 2001. In addition, she was among the team leaders in digs with 385. Hartmann returns to the squad for her second straight year as captain, having led the Diplomats in blocks last season with 79, including 43 solo blocks. She currently ranks fourth all time in blocks with 211, 162 off the school record. In addition, Hartmann tallied 212 kills in 101 games. Also leading the team will be outside hitter Kristen Kowalski (Jr., York, PA/ Central York). An All Mid-Atlantic region hitter in 2000, Kowalski has totaled 881 kills in the past three years, including 470 in 2000, to rank her sixth on the all time career chart. Junior outside hitters Maureen Lafferty (Jr., Collegeville, PA/ Villa Maria Academy) and Lynne Achenbach (Jr., York, PA/ Central York) have another year under their belts, which should give them experience and confidence. Lafferty was among the team leaders in digs (387), and could fill the libero position this season, while Achenbach was a key blocker for the Diplomats, averaging .45 blocks per game. Sophomore Elizabeth Earl (So., New Freedom, PA/ Susuehannock) brings much needed experience to the middle hitter position, finishing among the top three on the team in blocks (73), aces (72) and digs (434), along with leading the team in hitting percentage (.280) F&M (3-1) will continue the season on September 6-7 in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the 2002 Colorado College Tournament.
