Hartmann Leads F&M to 2002 Franklin & Marshall Volleyball Invitational Title

Lancaster, Pa.- Franklin & Marshall used the helped of middle blocker and tournament MVP Rose Hartmann (Sr., Warminster, PA/ William Tennent) to sweep through pool play and eventually take home the 2002 F&M Volleyball Invitational Championship.

The Diplomats advanced to the title tilt by knocking off Alvernia College and Widener University.

Against the Alvernia Crusaders, the Diplomats captured game one 30-10 by taking the last 20 points of the game on their way to a 3-0 victory (30-10, 30-23, 30-21).

Versus Widener, F&M pulled away to a two game lead before losing the last five points of game three to send the score to 2-1. In game four, Franklin & Marshall used consistent serving and rapid ball movement along with six straight points by Hartmann midway through the game to hold on and win the match 3-1 (30-22, 30-22, 24-30, 30-19). In addition, outside hitter Heidi Goedicke (Sr., Spring Church, PA/Elderton) recorded her 1,000th career kill as the Diplomats advanced to the title match.

In the championship match, F&M and Messiah split the first four games 30-23, 25-30, 30-22 and 23-30 before heading into the fifth and deciding game. Tied at 8-8, Franklin & Marshall College would muster a 7-0 run to finish the match and claim the championship.

The victory marked F&M's first five game match of the season as the Diplomats improve to 15-3 on the year, including an active 11 match-winning streak.

In other tournament action, Widener finished pool play 1-1 after sweeping Alvernia 30-26, 30-16 and 30-12, while Messiah finished 2-0 beating Elmira (30-28, 28-30, 30-21, 30-17) and DeSales (30-20, 30-26, 28-30, 30-21). Elmira finished second in pool play with a 1-1 record after they knocked off DeSales 3-0 (30-28, 30-14, 30-27).

In the fourth place match, Widener handled Elmira 3-0 (30-28, 30-26, 30-16). DeSales brought home fifth place with a 3-2 victory over Alvernia (22-30, 30-22, 26-30, 30-24, 17-15) as the Bulldogs rallied from a 9-1 deficit to win game five 17-15.

The Diplomats will return to action on September 25 when they travel to Centennial Conference foe Dickinson College. First serve is set for 7 PM.
