LANCASTER, PA - The Franklin & Marshall College volleyball team, led by All-Tournament team selection Maureen Lafferty (Sr., Collegeville, PA/Villa Maria), finished fourth in the annual F&M Scramble. The Diplomats opened the tournament against Widener University as the Diplomats cruised to a 3-1 victory (30-25, 30-21, 27-30, 30-19), but fell to SUNY-Brockport by a 3-1 final (30-23, 24-30, 18-30, 28-30) to make the third place match. Versus Catholic University of America, the Cardinals took a 2-0 advantage with 30-28 and 30-21 victories in the first two games of the match, but the Diplomats rallied to close the gap with a 30-24 victory in the third game. Leading 29-28, Franklin & Marshall could not hold the lead as Catholic scored the final three points of the match to take a 3-1 victory. Eastern University came away with the Tournament championship for the second consecutive year as the Eagles defeated Brockport 3-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-27). Overall, Eastern coasted to the title tilt by dropping Catholic (30-29, 30-23, 30-26) and Kean (30-20, 30-9, 30-9) behind the MVP performance of Erin Meredith. Meredith's selection marks her second straight appearance on the F&M All-Tournament team as she garnered honors in 2002 as Eastern defeated Moravian three games to one (30-26, 30-28, 18-30 and 36-34) for the title. In the fifth place match, Widener recorded a 3-0 victory (30-28, 30-22, 30-27) over Kean. Franklin & Marshall (1-2, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on September 4 at home versus Elizabethtown College in the traditional "Harrisburg Spike" match. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Mayser Center.
