ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - Libero Meghan Godorov (Jr., Orefield, PA/Parkland) recorded 51 digs to set a new five game match record as the Franklin & Marshall volleyball team came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Elizabethtown College 3-2 (29-31, 29-31, 30-27, 31-29, 15-11) in the annual "Harrisburg Spike" match. Godorov's mark erases the previous five-game rally-scoring record of 40 digs that she established on November 1, 2003 in a 3-2 loss to Messiah College. Further, the performance marks the most digs ever recorded in a five-game match at Franklin & Marshall College eclipsing the mark of 38 digs (pre-rally scoring) set by Melynne Stufft '00 in a 3-2 win over Mount Union College on September 13, 1997. Trailing 2-0 following back-to-back 31-29 losses to the Blue Jays, the Diplomats rallied to avoid defeat by taking the third game 30-27. Following a narrow 31-29 win in game four, Franklin & Marshall closed out the match with a 15-11 victory in game five for the program's 10th straight win against Elizabethtown dating back to a loss in 1995. Leading the way for Franklin & Marshall in the 2004 edition of the series was middle blocker Elizabeth Earll (Sr., New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) who tallied 18 kills, one assist, four digs, five solo blocks and two block assists, while setter Jackie Skibbie (Jr., Darby, PA/Merion Mercy) handed out 50 assists with four service aces, three kills and 15 digs. Outside hitter Rebecca Zeigler (Jr., Manchester, PA/Northeastern) added 12 kills and eight digs. Named in honor of Harrisburg Pike, the road on which both Elizabethtown and Franklin & Marshall College are located, the "Harrisburg Spike" match is one of two trophy games between the Diplomats and Elizabethtown as the two schools compete for the Smith-Herr Boot in men's soccer. Previously, the loser of the "Spike" match was awarded a wood carving of a pike (i.e. fish) created by then Franklin & Marshall College head coach Steve Coulson. However, prior to the 2002 season, the pike was lost at Elizabethtown College and has never been replaced. Franklin & Marshall (1-0, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on September 4 at home in the F&M Invitational with SUNY-Brockport, Ursinus and Dickinson.
