LANCASTER, PA – Franklin & Marshall College outside hitter Margot Phelan (Fr., Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic All-Region honorable mention team. The first Franklin & Marshall player to earn All-Region Team honors as a freshman, the honors continues a string of firsts for Phelan. The first player to earn All-Centennial Conference (CC) honors as a freshman since 2002, Phelan became the first F&M freshman player to earn All-CC first team honors and is just the 14th player in Conference history to be named All-Conference as a freshman. Further, she is the third F&M freshman player to earn All-CC honors joining setter Jackie Skibbie (Sr., Darby, PA/Merion Mercy) and outside hitter Jen Power ’97 who earned second team honors in 2002 and 1994, respectively, and the fifth CC freshman player named to the first team joining Gettysburg setter Jen Krug (1994) and hitter Catherine Schott (1996), Haverford hitter Jen Constantino (2000) and Muhlenberg hitter Jen Lauro (2002). In her first season as a Diplomat, Phelan has recorded 443 kills on 1,118 attempts with a .266 hitting percentage, 19 assists, 15 service aces, 248 digs and 23 blocks (12 solo, 11 assist) in 101 games. Ranked 27th in the nation in kills per game in the October 31 NCAA Division III statistics, she was named to the September 13 and November 1 Centennial Conference Honor Rolls and earned All-Tournament honors at the St. Mary’s Invitational on October 28-29. The 17th F&M player named to the All-Centennial Conference first team, she is the program’s first All-Region selection since middle hitter Emily Green ’02 earned All-Region honors in the fall 2001. Historically, the program has earned 10 All-Region honors since 1995 as Jen Power ’97 (1995, 1996), Stacy Dunchick ’99 (1998), Julie Simpson ’00 (1999), Mary Kate Boland ’01 (1998, 1999, 2000), Green and Kristen Kowalksi ’02 (2000) previously earned the honor. The AVCA All-Region team is selected by a panel of Division III head coaches based upon each player's statistics and overall play. The Middle-Atlantic Region is one of six sections in the country that selects 12 players who are then eligible for All-American standing. Franklin & Marshall (21-9, 8-2 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on November 12 as the Diplomats secured their third Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament bid in program history as the Diplomats were selected as the #2 seed for the South Region Championship Tournament to be held on November 11-12 at #1 seed Lebanon Valley College. Following first round games on November 11 at Lebanon Valley pitting #4 Richard Stockton (27-8) versus #5 Johns Hopkins (23-6) at 4:00 p.m., and #3 Carnegie Mellon (19-18) versus #6 Washington & Jefferson (24-6) at 6:00 p.m., the Diplomats will begin play as #1 Lebanon Valley (26-6) will face the winner of the Stockton-Hopkins match at 11:00 a.m., before Franklin & Marshall (21-9, 8-2 Centennial Conference) will face the winner of the Carnegie Mellon-W&J match at 1:00 p.m. The ECAC championship match is set for a 4:00 p.m. start on November 12 as the Diplomats will look to conclude their season with the first postseason tournament title in program history.
