LANCASTER, PA -- Amy Abernathy (So., Far Hills, NJ/American School-Paris) scored 23 points and pulled down a game high 15 rebounds to lead Franklin & Marshall (1-0) to a 63-50 win over Waynesburg University in the opening round of the Franklin & Marshall College Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament. Abernathy would dominate in the first half laying in 13 points and grabbing 13 boards as the Diplomats built a 30-20 lead at the half. Overall, she would hit on 10 of 14 scoring attempts, and reeled in eight offensive and seven defensive rebounds. In addition, she swatted five balls as the Diplomats tallied seven blocked shots. The story of the game was turnovers as the Yellow Jackets gave up the ball 31 times, including 17 in the first half, while F&M turned it over 24 times for the game, 13 in the second half. Much of F&M's offense in the second half would come off give-aways as Centennial Conference Player of the Year and Honorable Mention All-American Amy Kreitz (Sr., Allentown, PA/Salisbury) keyed F&M in the second half with nine points, all off Waynesburg turnovers, and three steals. Franklin & Marshall will continue the season tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in the tournament title game versus Lycoming College, a 91-34 winner over Rosemont College in the other opening round game. For Lycoming, Lyndy LeVan led all scorers with 14 points as the Lady Warriors held the Ramblers without a field goal until the 2:03 mark of the first half. Overall, Rosemont would connect on only nine of 39 attempts, including four of 10 from beyond the three-point arc. Rosemont's Kathleen Pitts was the high woman for the Ramblers with 11 points off a three of four shooting performance from three-point range. On Sunday, Rosemont will face Waynesburg in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m., before F&M and Lycoming meet for the title at 3:00 p.m. Admission is free.
