Muhlenberg Holds Off F&M 74-62 in Women's Basketball

LANCASTER, PA - Muhlenberg College received 16 points from Gwen Doyle and a 15 point six rebound day from Susan Marchiano to defeat Franklin & Marshall College 74-62 in women's basketball.

The Mules went on a 20-4 run in the first eight minutes of the game and never looked back as Lindsay Tis paced Muhlenberg in the first half with nine points. Overall, Muhlenberg capitalized on 18 Diplomat turnovers to build a 39-28 lead going into the locker room.

For F&M in the first half Amy Abernathy (Jr., Far Hills, NJ/American School-Paris) was a perfect six-for-six from the field for 12 points and added six strong rebounds as the Diplomats clawed their way back to within seven points with 4:05 left in the first half.

However, Abernathy was e forced to play conservative in the waning minutes of the half due to foul trouble as the Mules held on to the 11 point halftime lead.

Following a surge by the Mules in the opening minutes of the second half to push the lead to 19 with 4:39 left on the game clock, the Diplomats reeled off a 12-1 run behind five points from Kirsten Richter (Sr., Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) to pull within eight points with 1:22 to play.

However, Muhlenberg finished the game with a 4-2 run off foul-shooting and solid defense as the rally came up short.

On the day the Diplomats shot 33.9% (20-of-59) from the field and 57.6% (19-of-33) from the line, while Muhlenberg converted 41% (25-of-61) and 66.7% (18-of-27) at the line.

Overall, Muhlenberg used solid shooting from Gwen Doyle as she scored nine points on three-off-four from the field and two-of-three from the foul line in the second half on her way to a game high 16 points.

For the game, three Diplomats reached double figures in scoring as Abernathy led the way with 16 points and thirteen rebounds, Courtney Tierney (Jr., Princeton, NJ/The Hun School) dropped in 12 points and Richter scored 10 points. Off the bench, Dana Johns (Fr., York, PA/ Eastern York) gave the Diplomats a spark as she scored six points and collected two steals.

For the Mules (3-2, 1-0 Centennial Conference), Doyle, Susan Marchiano (15) and Lindsay Tis (13) reached double digits in points, while Randi Baran added a game high five steals.

Franklin & Marshall College (3-2, 1-1 Centennial Conference) will return to action on December 13 when they play host to Albright College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
