Abernathy Nears 1,000 Points as Women's Basketball Falls to Swarthmore, 70-63

SWARTHMORE, PA - Swarthmore College guard Katie Robinson shot nine-of-18 from the field and 11-of-12 at the free throw line for a game high 29 points as the Garnet defeated Franklin & Marshall College 70-63 in Centennial Conference women's basketball. The Garnet never trailed in the game as Swarthmore broke a 2-2 tie with an 8-0 run to take a 10-2 lead. Franklin & Marshall cut the lead to three at 18-15 with 4:49 left in the half off a field goal by center Amy Abernathy (Jr., Far Hills, NJ/American School Paris). However, Robinson drained three shot and added three free-throws over the four minutes to fuel an 22-6 spurt as Swarthmore carried a 40-21 advantage into the locker room. The Diplomats fought back in the second half, cutting the lead to five with 4:12 to play following a three-pointer by Kirsten Richter (Sr., Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing), but Robinson scored the next five points to push the lead back to 10 points as the Garnet improved to 15-5, 8-2 in Centennial Conference play. For F&M, Abernathy led the Diplomats with 19 points off nine-of-14 shooting, blocked four shots and pulled down nine rebounds to raise her career numbers to 985 points and 762 rebounds for her three-year career. Richter added 14 points, including a game high three treys, while Dana Johns (Fr., York, PA/Eastern York) chipped in 10 points and five rebounds as the Diplomats fall to 10-9, 4-6 in Centennial Conference play. The key to the game was turnovers as the Diplomats committed 29, including 18 in the first half, while Swarthmore turned the ball over 19 times in the game with 10 in the first half. Franklin & Marshall will return to action on February 12th at home versus Gettysburg College. Game is set for 7 p.m.
