NASSAU, BAHAMAS - Center Amy Abernathy (Jr., Far Hills, NJ/ American School-Paris) scored 14 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked six shots to earn Most Valuable Player honors as the Franklin & Marshall College women's basketball team downed Carnegie Mellon University 57-53 to capture the Bahamas Gommbay Classic in Nassau, Bahamas.

Abernathy dominated under both baskets as she led a Diplomats offense that outscored the Tartans 34-26 in the paint. Further, she shot seven-of-12 from the field and pulled down 10 defensive boards to finish the tournament with 29 points and 26 rebounds in two games versus collegiate competition.

From the outside, guard Jamie Drahos (Sr., Ambler, PA/Wissahickon) shot six-of-14 from the field and four-of-five at the free throw line for 16 points and pulled down six rebounds to join Abernathy on the All-Tournament team.

Guard Kirsten Richter (Sr., Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) added 10 points and eight rebounds as the Diplomats claimed their first Goombay Shootout Title following a 74-70 loss to Whitman College in the 1999 title game.

For the Tartans, Carissa Sain scored a team high 13 points and Erin Brady pulled down a game high 15 rebounds as CMU outscored F&M 18-15 on second chance points, 13-6 off the bench and out-rebounded the Diplomats 53-48.

The key to the game was free throw shooting as the Tartans converted only 14-of-29 from the line.

Overall, the Diplomats (7-2) advanced to the title game courtesy a 58-55 win over Nassau Select. In the semi-final contest, Nassau had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but a desperation three-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.

For Carnegie Mellon (8-3), the game left the Tartans with a 2-1 record in the tournament as CMU stunned #9 nationally ranked Kings College 59-54 in the semi-finals to earn a bid to the title tilt.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on January 8 at Elizabethtown College. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
