Johns, Abernathy & Diplomats Rank Among Leaders in February 1 NCAA Women's Basketball Statistics

LANCASTER, PA - Franklin & Marshall College center Amy Abernathy (Sr., Far Hills, NJ/American School Paris) and point guard Dana Johns (So., York, PA/Eastern York) rank among the national leaders in the latest NCAA Division III women's basketball statistics for games through February 1. A 2004 D3hoops.com Preseason All-America selection, Abernathy ranks second in the nation in rebounding with 14. 3 boards per game, 0.9 boards behind national leader Jacclyn Rock of Staten Island (15.2 rpg). In addition, she ranks fifth in blocked shots per game with 4.0, 1.7 off the pace of national leader Karin Schaller of Blufton (5.7 bpg), and 48th in field goal percentage at 52.1 percent, 15.5 percent behind Alicia Davis of Loras (67.6 percent). She has registered 226 rebounds, 258 points and 63 blocked shots this year as Abernathy joined Anne Krumrine '90 (1,811 points, 1,180 rebounds) and Tina Breithaupt '94 (1,293 points, 1,108 rebounds) as only the third women's basketball player in school history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. Overall, she is just the fourth basketball player in school history to accomplish the feat as Gus Lovett '53 (1,223 points, 1,161 rebounds) is the only men's player to reach a grand in both categories. In her career, Abernathy now has 1,330 points, 1,037 rebounds and 221 blocked shots as she is sixth in school history in scoring, while ranking third in rebounds and second in blocked shots. In addition, she is third in blocked shots, fifth in rebounding and 12th in scoring in Centennial Conference history. In steals, Johns ranks 35th with an average of 3.5 per game, 1.6 behind national leader Stephanie Cleary of Ithaca (5.1 spg). Through the first 16 games of the season, she leads the team with 45 steals. As a team, F&M ranks 32nd in three point field-goal percentage at 35.3 percent, just behind national leader Alma which is draining 41.3 percent of its "threes". Franklin & Marshall (8-8, 8-4 Centennial Conference) will return to action on February 5 at home versus Elizabethtown College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
