Abernathy Named CC Player of the Year; Tierney, Abernathy & Johns Named to All-CC Team

by Sports Information
2/26/04

LANCASTER, PA - Franklin & Marshall College center Amy Abernathy (Sr., Far Hills, NJ/American School-Paris) earned All-Centennial Conference first team honors and was named the 2004 Player of the Year to lead three All-Centennial Conference women's basketball selections for the Diplomats.

A three-time All-Centennial Conference honoree following a second team nod in 2001 and a first team nod last year, Abernathy's selection as the player of the year marks the second time a Diplomat has earned the Conference's highest honor. In 2001, two-time All-America guard Amy Kreitz '02 garnered the honor.

Further, Abernathy's selection as Player of the Year breaks a two-year streak by Swarthmore guard Katie Robinson who earned the honor in 2002 and 2003. Statistically, either a player from F&M or Swarthmore has earned the award over the last five years (2000 - Heather Kile, Swarthmore; 2001 - Amy Kreitz, F&M; 2002 - Katie Robinson - Swarthmore; 2003 - Katie Robinson - Swarthmore; 2004 - Amy Abernathy, F&M).

A 2004 D3hoops.com Preseason All-America selection, she has recorded a breakout season as she has tallied 385 points (16.7 ppg), 322 rebounds (14.0 rpg) and a school and Centennial Conference single season record 107 blocks (4.7 bpg) with eighteen double-doubles.

Further, in the latest NCAA statistics through games of February 22 she ranks second in the nation in rebounding (13.9 rpg), sixth in blocked shots (4.7 bpg) and 48th in field goal percentage (52.4%).

She made history on February 14 as she scored 13 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and swatted 10 blocked shots for a triple-double as the Franklin & Marshall College women's basketball team defeated Swarthmore College 57-48 in the Mayser Center.

Historically, her blocked shot performance was record shattering on a number of levels. For Abernathy, who recorded nine blocked shots in a 62-37 rout of Dickinson earlier in the week, her 10 blocks tied the Centennial Conference (Heidi Snyder, McDaniel vs. Washington, 2-9-95) and Franklin & Marshall (Anne Krumrine, vs. Ursinus, 2-4-89) single game record of 10 blocks in a contest and mark the most ever in a two-game span by an F&M player.

The third women's player in F&M history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career, she now has 1,440 points, 1,104 rebounds and 258 blocked shots as she is sixth in scoring, third in rebounding and second in blocked shots in F&M history.

Joining Abernathy on the All-Conference team is second team guard Courtney Tierney (Sr., Princeton, NJ/The Hun School) and honorable mention point guard Dana Johns (So., York, PA/Eastern York).

Ranked among the nation's best three-point shooters in the February 22 NCAA Division III women's basketball statistics, Tierney is 48th in three-point field goal percentage (36.9) and 44th in three-point field goals per game (2.4).

The team's second leading scorer with 363 points (15.8 ppg) through 23 regular season games, Tierney has connected on 53-of-151 three-point attempts (35.1%) while ranking second on the team in assists (79) and third in rebounds (82) to make the All-Conference team for the first time.

For her career, she has 619 points, 166 rebounds and 92 assists while making 92-of-269 three-point attempts (34.2%) in 46 games in a Franklin & Marshall College uniform since transferring from Division I Farleigh Dickinson University-Metropolitan two years ago.

The team leader in steals (69), assists (85) and three-point field goal percentage (36.2%), Johns ranks third on the team in scoring with 204 points (9.7 ppg) and fourth in rebounding with 60 boards (2.9 rpg).

For her career, Johns has tallied 335 points, 110 rebounds, 143 assists and 105 steals while shooting 53-of-151 (35.1%) from beyond the arc.
