TRENTON, NJ – Al Gianforti (Fr., Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) won the freshman/sophomore 149 lbs. championship, while Justin Herbert (Fr., New Milford, PA/Blue Ridge) and Nico Somers (Fr., Green Village, NJ/Madison) finished as runner-ups at 165 and 197 lbs., respectively, at the Central Jersey Wrestling Open hosted by The College of New Jersey. Gianforti captured a title in his first intercollegiate matches as he received a first round bye before defeating Nausau Community College’s Frank Meringelo (8-4 decision) and Chris Cartwright (6-2 decision), Delaware Valley’s Tom Cunningham (7-3 decision) and Nausau’s Matt Scott (5-2 decision) before defeating Jack Barrett of Rutgers 5-4 in the title match. Herbert advanced to the title bout as he received a first round bye before dropping Delaware Valley’s Chuck Faulkner 3-2 and Middlesex Community College’s Paul Ritchey 6-4 in overtime. He earned a title appearance by handling Randy Moore 3-2 before falling to Tyler Tisdell of George Mason 9-4 in the championship match. Somers earned his title shot in two matches by pinning Adam Cholminsky of Middlesex Community College in 3:12 and recording a 4-3 win over Steve Carbone of The College of New Jersey. However, Mike Eastman of George Mason took the title without stepping on the mat as Somers fell by injury default. Joe Perretta (Sr., Havertown, PA/The Haverford School) finished fourth in the junior/senior 141 lbs. matches as he pinned Tom Alimberti of Springfield College in 3:25 before falling 6-4 to Dan Hall of Delaware Valley. In the consolation round, Perretta downed Wagner’s Mike Tutunjian before falling by a 6-4 decision to Pete Marques of Springfield in the consolation final Franklin & Marshall College will return to action on November 19 at the East Stroudsburg University Invitational. 125 lbs, (Frosh/Soph)
