Coughlin Places Fourth at 285 lbs. as Diplomats Compete at Wilkes Wrestling Open

WILKES BARRE, PA – Heavyweight Shawn Coughlin (Sr., Berkley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) wrestled his way to the consolation final to place fourth at 285 lbs. and lead the Franklin & Marshall College wrestling team at the Wilkes University Open.

Coughlin advanced to the second round of the championship bracket as he pinned Duke University’s Mike Tunick in 29 seconds before falling to James Madison University’s Matt Coffey 12-6 in the first of two meetings between the heavyweights.

In the consolation bracket, Coughlin downed Hafeez Qureshi of Central Michigan University (1-0 decision), James Layman of New York University (11-3 major decision) and Mike Davidowich of Millersville University (7-3 decision) to clinch a spot in the consolation final where Coffey edged Coughlin 5-2.

In other action, Al Gianforti (Fr., Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) went 3-2 at 149 lbs., while Justin Herbert (Fr., New Milford, PA/Blue Ridge) won three matches in the consolation bracket to also finish 3-2 at 165 lbs.

Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on November 29 at the Midlands Tournament at Northwestern University before traveling to New Brunswick, New Jersey on January 7 to square off with Rutgers University, Wagner University and Delaware State University.
