CARLISLE, PA - Franklin & Marshall's Sam Pollinger (So., Mahwah, NJ/Northern Highlands) crossed the finish line in 1:50.57, just 0.61 seconds behind collegiate winner Holly Thompson of Western Maryland, as the Franklin & Marshall indoor track & field team opened the 2001-02 season at the Dickinson College Holiday Invitational. Pollinger's performance capped a day of early season success by the Diplomats as several athletes achieved new personal bests and school records. Jackie Bentley (Jr., Mercersburg, PA/James Buchanan) placed sixth in the 300-meter dash in 46.02, while Monique Lumsden (Fr., Brooklyn, NY/Nightingale-Bamford) placed third in the shot put with a heave of 14' 3.25". Both Pollinger and Bentley's performances are believed to be school records, but are in the process of being verified to accuracy. On the men's side, Dan Massey (Sr., Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) streaked across the line in 39.36 in the 300 meter dash, while Keith Hamilton (Sr., Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) finished first in the 600 meter run in a time of 1:27.42. Both are also believed to be school records. Hamilton continued his day by placing third in the 55 meter high hurdles in 8.33, and joined Cliff Smith (So., Chester, PA/Chester), Justin Allen (So., Bangor, ME/Bangor) and Ken Thompson (Jr., Baltimore, MD/Friends School) on the third place 4X400 meter relay team which finished in 3:39.49. Other top performers included Luke Oeding (Jr., Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) with a height of 13'6" in the pole vault for second place, and Mike Gorsky (Fr., Sharon, MA/Sharon) who leapt 39'7" for third in the triple jump. Overall, the F&M men finished fourth with 82 points, just 11 points out of first place, while the women recorded their best team score in an invite in over two years with 31 points, good for sixth place.
