Benford & Diplomats Prepare for Centennial Conference Track & Field Championships

by Sports Information
5/2/02

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The ninth annual Centennial Conference Outdoor Track and Field championships are slated for this weekend at Ursinus College's Patterson Field. And the field will be chasing the Haverford men and the Dickinson women.

The Fords have won all eight previous men's Conference championship meets and dominated the indoor championship. Dickinson has finished second to Haverford the past two years, while Muhlenberg will also contend.

Dickinson's Chavaun Johnson was the Outstanding Performer in the indoor championships and will be a force to contend with in the 100, 200 and 400. Other individuals to watch include Dickinson's Ben Wiley (shot); Franklin & Marshall's Keith Hamilton (hurdles) and Luke Oeding (pole vault); Gettysburg's Phil Ferraro (400) and Chris Buchanan (hurdles); Haverford's Peter Rook (800, 1500), J.B. Haglund (1500, steeplechase), Willie Stroever (steeplechase), Brandon Rowe (5K and 10K) and Thomas Reynolds (discus); Johns Hopkins' Quinlan Amos (100, 200, long jump) and Rajeev Mahajan (high jump); Muhlenberg's Brendan Gallagher (10K), Jason App (pole vault), Matt Frye (pole vault) and Randy Holak (javelin); Ursinus' Rich Watson (200, 400) and Naquan Williams (jumps); and Western Maryland's Ifeanyi Ani (jumps), Teron Powell (jumps), Ben Hull (discus) and Dave Hose (discus, shot).

For Franklin & Marshall, Oeding (Jr., Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township), the Centennial Conference indoor pole vault champion with a Conference record height of 14-6, is coming into the championships fresh off shattering the F&M outdoor track and field record by clearing 15'-0" at the Millersville Metrics last weekend. His performance bettered the previous best of 14' 11.25" held by Ed Eisenberg '85 from the 1983 season.

On the track, Hamilton (Sr., Willow Grove, PA/Upper Dublin) enters the championships ranked second in the 400 intermediate hurdles (56.10) and third in the 110 hurdles (15.92). In relay competition, he is part of the third ranked 4X100 meters (43.63) team. At the indoor championships, he was part of the 4X200 team of Andrew Thompson (Fr., Windsor, CT/Loomis-Chaffee), Cliff Smith (So., Chester, PA/Chester) and Dan Massey (Sr., Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) which crossed the finish line first in 1:33.26 to edge out Haverford (1:34.03).

In women's action, the Red Devils have won four Conference titles, including the last three. Haverford has finished second in the Conference five times and is looking to break through for its first title since 1995. Gettysburg, Swarthmore and Ursinus cannot be counted out.

Swarthmore senior Imo Akpan looks to continue her run of Centennial success. She won six gold medals at the indoor championship meet and has already qualified provisionally for the NCAAs in the 200 and 400. Other individuals to watch include Bryn Mawr's Claudine Johnson (400); Dickinson's Callie Bradley (800), Alex Forte (1500), Liz Allen (5,000) and Christine Hufenbecher (400 IH); Gettysburg's Joanna Silver (400) and Lauren Davis (1500); Haverford's Danielle McCabe (800), Kristen Wilson (10K), Caitlin Kight (400 IH) and Hiro Takahashi (Pole Vault); Johns Hopkins' Kathy Darling (discus, javelin); Muhlenberg's Meaghan Douglas-Snyder (pole vault); Ursinus' Katie Dougherty (1500) and Latonia Tiggett (400 IH); and Western Maryland's April Brown (100, 200).

The Diplomats' will look to Bryn Benford (Fr., Malvern, PA/Great Valley) in the field events as she is ranked in the top ten in triple jump (fifth, 33'-8.75"), discus (fifth, 107'-9"), javelin (7th, 101'-11") and high jump (fourth, 4'-11").

Competition begins Friday with the first day of the decathlon and heptathlon.
